I too am under 18.
I have been using the propeller for a year now, and have been into electronics seriously for at least five years. Before that I had been messing around with it for several years.

When I was 8-9 I didn't have the luxury of a soldering iron and the solder was a 1/4" bar and flux was in a jar. My solderion iron was homemade. A bolt with a filed end and a coil wound around it and connected to a 1.5V telephone battery. The other end was screwed into a wooden cotton reel. Most of these items don't exist today.
I used to make crystal sets for friends, from matchbox to shoebox sizes.
The worst experience was being thrown across the room when I got bit by 240Vac. I was 9. Lucky for me I never told my parents until a few years ago - best to keep those things to oneself, otherwise the electronics would have been over.
Enjoy the hobby. It is a great experience and may lead to better things. It is still advancing at a phenominal rate.

I have my uncle to thank for getting me interested in electronics when he sent me a Grow-bot (similar to the Boe-Bot, but you have to assemble it from the PCB up) about 4 years ago.
Since then I've been pulled into the Prop, working on a LED cube and an autonomous RC car in what little free time I have, and when funding permits.

I can understand that one. Hooked up a 10 to 1 transformer backwards while in Elementary School. 1200V Hurts. 347V AC in commercial buildings hurts a lot more though. After only 1 month as an electrician I grabbed the wrong wire of 2 and felt it course through my whole body.
Matthew cool looking LED Cube.

I used to fool around in the basment with a jacob's ladder built from Model T Ford·ignition coil·that my dad had. 25KV if I remember. I had to get rid of it because my parents could not watch TV because of the interference (pre cable-1970's).
I think it was OBC that I can share with the stripping wires with teeth and getting that 48 volts from the telephone lines :)
Bottom line is, we have all made·a few mistakes making magic smoke, but for the 18 and youngers, this is the time to do it, employers later on kind of look down on that
The young folk now a day have some great, powerful·tools to work with today, Parallax being one of the best for leaning. A far cry from·the Altair 8800 with 256 Bytes of RAM that was my first build.
And for those of you that do smoke a few components, I have a pretty good inventory of stuff that I would be glad to send you.
Sorry no extra Quad Rovers at this time

Still trying to·get over this bad flu
OBC's avatar reminded me of something I did when younger than the youngest on this forum. Old coat hanger wire, with the joining ends untwisted made for a large 'shunt'. This was in the early 30's probably; but I stuck both ends into an ac outlet. I was lucky to have been insulated on the hot side or was holding the ground side. Huge sparks, and probably blew a fuse; pre circuit breaker days. When my dad got home I probably got a spanking; or maybe didn't need one from the experience.
Oh yes, OBC's avatar looks like a pic of me just before the 'fireworks'. Little did I know then I'd gravitate towards things electrical and electronic. I may be one of the eldest on this forum, but appreciate all the things available to today's young. That includes me, guys. (Let's not go into who'se older than than say 65!)
You will not get electrocuted doing the coat hanger trick as long as you plug into the neutral(longer pin if correctly wired) side first. If well insulated from ground you will also not get electrocuted. I often touch hot wires with my hands but I wear electrically resistant boots and make sure touching nothing else. Obviously i try to use tools before using hands though.
*I do not recommend this. The wire could explode.

Ole Man Earl: I remember the bobby pin. I had one burn a trace into my thumb when I stuck it into the socket in the bathroom. It got so hot so fast that I was burnt before I could even think of letting go of it.
