How many prop users are under 18?

Just a quick question, how many propeller users on this forum are under the age of 18?
(There is no pressure whatsoever. If no one answers this post I will not be offended.)
I myself am 14 years old.

Sweet! An early happy birthday to you Vaati.
My birthday is in February, on the 21st.
Oh, also there is an 80% chance I will be moving to Sandusky, OH in late August.

Cool! That's 4. I think I remember microcontrolled saying he/she was disappointed that he/she couldn't enter the 2009 propeller contest, because he/she was 4 years off...

    Here's another!

I am 14 and have been doing electronics since 7; Parallax Microcontrollers since 10.
I have thouhgt about posting this before to find others my age interested in the same thing...... Also, notice that Vaati stole my "My head is SPINing" line. When I told him before I had no clue he was my age. Processing Data is a total suprise; from the answers he gives I figured he was at least 18.

    P.S. That's a "He" by the way. :-)

Whoah! I started at exactly the same age--I got a huge kit from radioshack with analog and cmos stuff when I was 7 and started with the BS2 when I was 10.

When did all of you start using the prop? I started about two or three months ago... smile.gif

October 2008 I started the Prop.

I am so cheap I got JUST a prop and built the serial programmer with spare parts. I learned Spin on the online Manuel and by looking at other programs. This method of learning it was slow and took about a month. I didn't get seriously into it until I got a Hydra for Christmas.

I got a 200 in 1 when I was 7, Dabbled a bit in Visual Basic and HTML when I was 10, then got a Basic Stamp homework board when I was 12. A year later I got into the propeller.
My dad kept all of his 8088 books, including "Microproccessers and Interfacing", from collage. He did some with it, but not a whole lot. So I read it, and wow. That book covers everything from speech recognition to supercomputers. I Skipped all the assembly parts, but I still could figure out how it was all working.
See if you can pick it up somewhere, it's very helpful, and a good read.

I did not get a good start in electronics, but I am going just fine now. No one in my family has any clue in the electroinics catagory so I don't have any resources but what I buy myself.

Been riding the tubes for 10 years, should have the hang of it by now wink.gif . Also, what predators go looking for children to attack on an electronics forum?

I got started with C++ programming from my very enthusiastic uncle when I was almost 7 (with a beautiful donated $500 compiler + IDE smile.gif ). Arrived a little late to microcontrollers, but it has been an interesting transition from programming high level languages to using low level pasm and nice soft+fluffy spin as well as low level C and asm for atmegas.

Right now it is mostly just me and another friend, so the site is a little narrow, but if I can find at least one or two more kids willing to be involved (turned out to be a difficult task) I am ready to reorganize the site to reflect it's original purpose. We are about to switch hosting from google to a much less restricting service soon, so now would be a good time to join our little movement lol.gif

I just got back from the UPEW event in California, and boy am I glad that I went. I am currently 15 and I got my Propeller education kit 2 Christmas's ago. The propeller was my first micro controller and only the third IC that i have worked with, behind the 555 and 741. I found it very easy to learn spin, even though it was my first programming language. Assembly was a whole lot harder. Nobody in my family has a background of electronics, so I really don't have much support. It would be great to form a "Youth propeller group".

I have a project that I think would be a good candidate for your site. For those of you who met me at the expo, I was the kid with the LED screen and the crazy soldering on the back. Heres a boring video of it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYMMWTVTndk. I probably need more animations to display on it.

Unfortunately, most 13-15 year olds do not have enough funding for customized PCBs.

    ProcessingData...

I soldered this terrible thing when I was in 8th grade for my final tech ed project of the year. My tech teacher had no idea what I was talking about when I started this thing and just let me solder for the rest of the year. Back then, I had an Elenco soldering station with a 40 watt soldering iron that came with it (Model SL-5). It wasn't that great of a soldering iron, but it somehow worked. Several months after finishing the soldering, I got a Xytronic 25 watt iron with a 1/64 inch tip for my birthday. I wish I had that iron for my project! It actually gets hotter than the 40 watt one, and heats up in about a minute and a half.

Would my LED screen be a good candidate for your site? I have plans to build a 16 by 16 one and eventually 32 by 32 if I get a research grant from my parents. I don't think anybody is crazy enough to build this thing for themselves, so I will eventually have to move to PCB's.

    True.

If you learn eagle I can panelise boards together. And make for $1.5 per square inch.

Or you can learn to make your own. Fairly cheap to buy chemicals and blank boards

That project is perfect, just the kind of thing I was hoping would be out there. I've always wanted an led matrix like that, but the cost and the soldering (with my horrible $10 radioshack iron) have always been an obstacle, which is why I decided to make persistence of vision displays instead.

I just had an idea that may be really cool for everyone who is young and is trying to get seriously involved with electronics and other sciences. If I get enough people to be contributors to my site we might be able to set up some sort of fund with sponsors or donations or the like that will allow much more complex projects to be built. Cost really is the only limit for kids in science, especially electronics, so it may be something worth pursuing. I already have a donations system set up for my current site, but when I switch hosting services it is going to radically change (hopefully for the better).

If anyone really wants to be a part of this just send me a private message. I can start adding contributors and putting projects up on the web in as soon as a week or two. I've already got a few interested people, but if you know anyone else that might want to help tell them to send me an email through this page:

    @SciNemo: Just got back from my 2 day trip or I would have posted this earlyer: I will post my projects on your site. Cost is the only limit; I have found that PS2 connectors are a good investment at 1000 for $20, selling at $.20 each. I now have a $70 profit in $$$. :-D This has opened me up for some new equipment, but I also have 4 siblings which I feel obligated to buy birthday and Christmas presents for...... { $$$ = 0 = :-( }

But anyway, I would love to post all my projects to your site, and if I can get a delayed order cleared up with my PS2 (mini-din) "buissness" then I will donate 100 PS2 connectors to your website for the distribution among other enthusiastic Youth Prop users. :-D

P.S. @Ole Man Earl: Your joking about that REALLY being a picture of you, right?
