God, another disaster. I installed UbuntuStudio onto a UsB stick to see how it would run. Its was great, much faster than the live DVD. But then i set the pC back to startup with the disk again and not the USB, I even took out the UsB stick(the second time)

whell now i get nothing but a white blinking line. Ive double checked the boot order and its right where it should be but still nothing, have i lost Mint and windows ? what could have caused this ? Running live dvd's never hurt my boot sequence before. Is the boot manager corrupted ?

i really had better things todo today with the robot than fix my Pc ! still have to use windows to use Simple Ide and other editors. its all gone...or has it ?

I can't understand how i have lost Mint and widows. In the mean time so i can do some programming, could i get a bit of a walkthrough on how to install the Arduino into Ubuntu ?

Ive tried to follow their directions but i am stuck. The first pic is the command I was told to type in the second pic is just a mile long list of everything that was installed. I can't follow their further directions ?

I would really like to get this robot moving today if you can help at all with Linux commands and directories ?

Just tried doing the install in LM17 and it was straightforward. You know, out West you might kick your dogs but when you try that with your PCs they end up byting you back :)

Since you installed form the terminal it is simply telling you what it's doing as it is doing what you asked, installing Arduino

When I start typing in A R D in my start menu it comes up with "Arduino IDE" and runs it fine.

Dear Peter, I didnt think it could be that simple. Everything else has been going slightly squadid..., but of course it works fine as you have pointed out so thank you. BTW did you ever have a crack at getting a parallax usb/serial port working with Wine.

Oh, I can get them to work but the problem is that they never work very well. I just called up TeraTerm in Wine and it will communicate with my Tachyon boards, but it can drop characters if I go too fast. That's what I mean about Wine being great for some Windows programs but not really for those which depend upon USB or realtime, as many of the programs you want to use do. Always use the Linux equivalent instead, just like you installed Arduino for Linux or if there is nothing else but the Windows version then install VirtualBox and install a version of Windows inside that. The good thing about the VirtualBox method is that you can clone your Windows install as a single file, in my case that file has grown to over 43GB because I have every Windows program I could ever need at my fingertips while I only work from inside Linux.

    Hello ,
I think I'm finally getting more ease and understanding with Linux, though it will continue to be a learning experience, however I'm very happy to have both SimpleIDE and the Arduino IDE working well in the only OS I’ve got running now on my PC . Ubuntu. Especially as they are both the MC boards I intend to work with. I stopped thinking it was too hard and started reading directions and navigating through directories and making mistakes and trying again until both are now installed and running and there is no trouble finding a com port. and some here have the patience of Jove..

making it a lot more pleasant and doable.

Yes, from my own experience it does get easier as you learn more. And I was particularly please to find that I could actually learn a lot more in Linux that proprietary OSes were ever willing to teach.

Even if you were to become a professional and provide support for a proprietary OS, the knowledge gained from Linux will give you better overview of what an OS is and what it should be doing.

I have been vacillating between learning Spin and C for the prop using my 2 and a half boards. The QuickStart and a Gadget gangster. Both great boards as far as i can tell. Then there is a prop kit. (waiting on the usb to serial chip., ie. prop plug)

I booted into windows and downloaded the prop tool and something else that i wish id not touched because that one download has made using the internet in windows a pain, lots of ad-ware etc. Really ruins it. Should be illegal !!! to do that to someones computer. but lucky i rarely boot into windows and it keeps getting rareer and rarer to boot windows. (where is my dictioinary ?)
