Well, at least you knew it might be, and you were consistent. But consistency was your downfall, I'm afraid. If you're unsure about a word's spelling but don't have time to look it up, use it twice and spell it differently in each instance. That way, people will assume that the wrong one (assuming one is right) is just a typo. smile.gif

Seriously, though, spelling and grammar corrections are only made to help. They're no different from pointing out programming errors and should be taken in the same spirit. Think of it as "English debugging".

I was thinking more of the Cheese Shop Sketch....

PropellerHeads:
It's not much of a machine intelligence shop, is it?
Mallred:
Finest in the district, sir.
PropellerHeads:
Explain the logic underlying that conclusion, please.
Mallred:
Well, it's so clean, sir.

It's certainly uncontaminated by machine intelligence.

I was doing exactly the same. Then I came to a point that using ten times the same word in the same sentece makes the sentence not understandable (maybe I have invented encryption) so I removed the patent from this technique and made it opensourced in the hope that some one will remove the bugs.

dMajo,

I always check one's country of origin first, when that info is available in the profile. If it appears that English isn't one's first language, I take off my grammar cop badge and hide it in the drawer. * (I mean, heaven knows how atrocious my Spanish would be if I tried to use it here.) Any effort to communicate in a non-native tongue is always appreciated, and we will all try our best to decipher the most broken English. (Yours is quite good, BTW.)

But, since you asked, it's "feel free", not "fill free". smile.gif

* I don't really enjoy flashing ithe badge (not that I'm an expert anyway), since I've learned the hard way that it's often not appreciated. But repeat offenders who should know better do require attention, and behavior modification is most effective when applied at an early age! I fear that texting is ruining basic literacy, though. What was that old matchbook cover ad? "If u cn rd ths, u cn gt a gd jb w mo pa." It's almost come to that in normal discourse.

I've never understood why so many programmers are so sloppy with their spelling and grammar not to mention semantics when speaking or writing. Often they will strongly argue why they should be free to be so and then anyone suggesting corrections becomes a "grammar Nazzi" or "spelling cop". This is odd amongst a group that lives by the correctness of it's spelling, syntax and semantics when dealing with computer programming languages.

For them it is acceptable that a compiler complains about an undefined variable or misplaced comma but not for a fellow human. "What's it matter?", they will say, "y'know what I mean".

Why is that ?

Along with people who are terminally late, I've always interpreted it as "I'm more important than you, therefore my time is more valuable". A variant of "I'm in too much of a rush to take the time to be correct, so instead I'll impose on your time to interpret what I'm saying". It's just plain bad manners. We all make mistakes (I do it quite regularly) but in the day of spell checkers, on-line dictionaries (and my faithful hardback Collins) there is absolutely no excuse for bad spelling, particularly when you've done it, you know you've done it, you comment on the fact you've done it and yet you leave it in error.

It smacks of a complete lack of attention to detail. One that is sure to trip you up on your first job interview. It's also a very poor reflection on todays education systems, but that is a whole other rant :)

It's a pet peeve of mine, along with not using proper punctuation, capitalisation and spelling in SMS messages. Can you tell?

Nick: "No parser, no debugger!"

Not true. I or any listener is a parser and can be a debugger if we choose. As I said, often suggesting corrections provokes a bad reaction.

Not to mention that most have been to school. Schools are full of parser/debuggers, or should be, they are called teachers.

Yes, but then one does have to make the errors public before they can be parsed and debugged by others. And then it is too late.
Parsing / debugging should happen before the processors (= readers) see them.

But I'm not an English tongue, so I can make as many errors as I want. wink.gif All just for your amusement!

Nick, now I've got it. There are two major types of design/implementation in computer programming. Those that are compiled, e.g. C, and those that are interpreted, e.g. BASIC.

Compiled languages try to catch as many syntactic, semantic errors as possible before the target has to run the program.
Purely interpreted languages leave it all up to run time on the target.

The former is like the behavior of someone who mulls over what they want to say or write before they actually do it.
The later is like someone who expects the lister/reader to sort out the mess they receive. Except in this case the originator does not want feedback about mistakes.

This issue, runs deep. Many programmers hate bug reports, and many don't want to listen to "stupid users" who insist a program is behaving the wrong way or could be better.

@Microcontrolled: Grab a copy of Mozilla Firefox from here. and use
it instead of Internet Explorer or whatever you are using now. It has a built-in spell check that will
underline the words that it thinks are spelled wrong. When you right-click on them, it will make suggestions
on correct spellings. (Of course picking the wrong word could change your meaning, but then your
messages will be even more fun to read. :)
