Thanks for testing this and congrats. 720 x 480 might work on a CRT VGA monitor as line frequency the same; 858 pixels @ 27 MHz vs 800 @ 25.175 MHz for 640 x 480.

Multisync CRT monitors take just about anything that's within their spec range. 320x240 at 120Hz has the same line frequency as a standard VGA signal. This is clearly not intended and will make the image so sharp that it actually hurts (photo does not convey this effect very well).

720x480 modes are a problem for LCD monitors rather. They usually have trouble distinguishing them from 640x480 and will sample them with the wrong clock. If the controls can fix it, now the clock for 640x480 is messed up. Very obnoxious. I think at some point PC video cards started internally scaling these modes down to 640 pixels to reduce overall headaches.

The most obnoxious part for me is the lack of documentation in the monitor manuals/datasheets. Followed by missing and incorrect specs.

800x480 or something like that might be good for widescreen monitors…

I've got a cheap TV that reports, even on the HDMI port, any mode with 480 lines as just "480p". I have no idea what it thinks the horizontal resolution of "480p" even is.

  • Well, if it's HDMI, it will at least know for itself. Analog, it probably does 640 or 704 samples (or 720 with overscan), but who knows?
