If you're gonna put a P2EC board into an enclosed space, you should probably have some sort of added cooling. Otherwise they can run hot and crash. (Had great headaches about this about a year ago - According to @VonSzarvas empirically most boards (especially EC32MB Rev B ) can hang out just fine at room temp (mine doesn't) but no one's tested it in an enclosure)

Duly noted and good advice I think :)

  • Sign me up for one of these as well (or two depending upon price ;-)

I'll be attending if possible... can't confirm yet, tho'

  • Hey all, the Baggers/Coley/Chip/vonSvarvas team met today on Zoom to bring this project to completion.

It's going to be a big effort, but I'm certainly seeing commitment from the developers. Our community is thankful and appreciative of their efforts! More to follow.

seems like you have to buy them in 8-packs, right? :)

Single unit kits are part of the plan. However, there's a chance the 8-in-1 will appear at Parallax Propeller Developer Day (save the date May 2-3).

I wish I could go but we already have commitments to attend on the other side of the country. Maybe the next time, just need an earlier notice!

    Hi @Coley

I cut a first pass of your design in corflute, to get a feel for how it goes together, before committing to something more rigid. I'm trying to understand the intention with the hidden screws. Are these self-tappers? Or does the head of a cap head bolt sit in the hidden cavity?

Also, were magnets used for the rotatable screen bit?

    thanks
    Lachlan

    Hi Lachlan,

The intention with the hidden screws is to fit in a cavity created by engraving with the laser.
I used this type of screw...

Neodynium magnets were used on the 4 corners of the display section to keep them in place.

As Ken alluded to in his post earlier, I am revisiting the design to make it easier to fabricate.
The 8in1 cabinbets were made to hide all fixings where possible so a lot of the construction involves glueing and clamping parts together to make other parts that are used in the assembly porcess.

This new design will exist alongside the 8in1 and will feature a bigger screen and 6 control buttons that Ada suggested.
It will have it's own P2 Edge board inside, the design will be based on standard Parallax modules where possible so all the materials can be sourced easily.

I've converted/redrawn the model using Autodesk Fusion and added a link to the model located in the Obex in the first post.

Autodesk Fusion is available as a free download for personal use and may be useful if you want to explore the inner construction of the 8 in 1 cabinet.

I intend to use different construction methods for the standalone version of this cabinet with a view to making it easier to produce and assemble.

Edit: Updated model location (now in the Obex)

Progress, I still need to add some more controls to the front panel and I need to confirm the LCD size but this is the progress so far.
The cab is 25% wider than the 8in1 but I've managed to halve the number of individual components so should be a lot easier to assemble.

Comments and suggestions will be welcomed ;)

  • Mmmh big screen hole - these are surplus iPad screens, right? Probably one of the few sources of non-wide screens you can get your hand on - have you verified these actually do the right thing when you feed in 640x480 video?

Also, did you spend any thought on the button layout? Having them in a straight line may not be ergonomically optimal (Fingers are not equally long!). This article has some info and shows a bunch of variants: https://www.slagcoin.com/joystick/layout.html (The idea of having extra buttons in the sides for pinball (MegaYume can run Devil Crash MD!!!) is interesting, too.. extra cost though)

If it could be attached to a wall, might be able to be sturdy...

Looks like a good improvement Coley, many fewer parts

I did like the coin slot thingo, hopefully it makes a comeback at some stage but I understand it wouldn't be priority.

Is there a plan to show the P2 board somehow?

One further thought, prompted by the coin slot - would be to make that bottom section a drawer rather than fixed. You could hide the P2 and coins and wiring in there, and slide it forward to show the P2, or retrieve coins/tokens
