Erco,
While you are scouring the markets for laser modules, please tell us if you find a low cost red laser receiver module which can be used for modulated laser communications.
I have not been able to find such a module.
Many thanks in advance.
Can't you could just use a phototransistor? I sent voice and a dollar bill (don't ask) over an IR beam back in 1976 when I won the science fair, courtesy of Forest Mims great DIY books at Radio Shack. That was an IR LED in the Tx and a phototransistor in the receiver.
Erco,
Thanks for your quick response.
I have tried to build a few red laser phototransistor communication receivers but I have got bogged down in the analog circuit noise and filtering issues, and I have not achieved a robust solution.
I see the paper you phototransistor paper you put up is slightly different in that it uses three sensors, so I might try it.
Also, I see solar cells are surprisingly effective for red laser communication, and there are YouTube clips showing music transmission in this way.

The solar cell would be easier to align, just from a size standpoint.
