Well I forgot and left mine on the other night. With the DVD chip removed and the Propeller Proto Board running off a seperate supply the screen ran for about 12 hours. I didn't totaly discharge the battery so it can probably go a bit longer than that.

That is pretty awesome, I may have to pick on up! I do have a question though, would it be feasable to remove the top half/the screen, give it external power and video source and still get a picture?

By hooking to the data pin found on the back of the LCD board, I strongly suspect the only requirements left are power and ground. I'm heading this direction..

(Why can't we have 36 hour days? More time for Propeller stuff...:)

My two units just arrived! I'm thinking about using the earphone jack as either video or keypad input... Definitely want to rip out the DVD reader (although it seems a shame...) and insert Prop. Maybe there's room to put the battery charger circuit in there too...

Think we can connect the buttons to the Prop?

OBC,

Was looking at your 'dreaming_maybenot' picture and realized how small the unit is. The keypad measures about 3.8" Yeah, pretty small monitor screen for my ol' eyes.

And what is 'hackday'? I googled but it took me to some strange place. Maybe the URL is more complex that what I imagine.

Good work on getting the mini monitor working well. yeah.gif

OBC,

Nice plug for your hack on www.hackaday.com !

BTW - I ordered mine yesterday. I'm planning to put it on my UAV as a local monitor before takeoff, though I'll need to see how far it can be stripped down for weight.

Little off topic,

There is a very tiny 3v motor that moves the optics. Decent power too.
It's the one connected to the red/white leds. (so cut them near the board)
These might be interesting for bots later.. :)

Anyone see any problems with running the prop at 3.6v_dc 2.5a?

That is a very interesting idea (chopping up the proto board)! Does the existing board really run at 3.6 V? I assumed there was a voltage regulator to 3.3V in there somewhere...

Look at the pic of the hirose connector. There is a 3.3 and a 5V line. No idea what there running or how much juice can be pulled off of them.

The idea of using a spin stamp is starting to worry me. Would 3.6 be enough to keep its regulator happy, and for how long?

5v.. Where are they getting 5v from? Might be enough to support a PS2 keyboard jack somewhere.

Found it also at capacitor BC11 just behind the DVD Data connector. Between it and the battery connector.
If it's running the Backlight or the top side amp it could be risky hooking up to it.

OldBit, Datasheet says 3.6 OK. Absolute maximum of 4.0V.
So what do you think about the regulator on the spin stamp, would 3.6 volts be enough to run it.
I guess a better question would be does anybody know where I could find the datasheet for the reg on the spinstamp?

@bambino the best 3.3v LDO regulator I know of still needs 4 volts, he is talking about running the prop straight off the 3.6v, which SHOULD be happy, waiting on my pcb to come in the mail
Will have video, audio, SD, and interface the buttons, pics to follow

EDIT:
Also seriously considering adding an av input somewhere with a voltage detector to switch input over, would be quite handy at times.
Sigh, looks like I will have to order another PCB, only thing I didn't think of that I really want.

Has anyone opened the half of the case containing the screen and taken pictures? How thick is that part of the case, anyway? I'm wondering how much room there is in there for something like a bluetooth or xbee board.

I've got a couple on order that should arive in the next few days. I'd like to use the keys built into the screen half and maybe put some other electronics up there (inspired by a lot of the EEE PC hacks, I guess).

There isn't much room for additional parts. If you sacrificed one of the speakers, maybe, but it's a pretty thin (width wise) area.

I've got hopes of getting buttons working myself. I think it should be doable from the connection on the bottom board.

OBC, I updated that hirose connector shot. It now has the button lines and the spi lines marked!
I don't now if my hands can stay steady long enough, but I also found the button lines on the pads where the chip was removed.
The Wire wrap guage I have laying around is perfect for the pitch of those pads, but time will tell!

WOW!

After a couple more cartons, would you mind posting a pinout for that? There's no way to see it any other way.

That is possible, But let me get some more Pepsi&Pizza in me. Ran into one problem too that I'm going to need you to verify on your board. I found two pads that map out to the TV signal, most likely nothing, but possibly I've shorted something!
Anyway, I'll have more later tonight!

I'm wondering if it might be easier to gently scrape the vias and solder to those points to prevent side-by-side shorting.

Glad I own a magnification light on my workbench. :)

OK, I'm back, but I have a problem. I didn't take a picture of the pads before I soldiered and Like you said It's hard to see thru the nail hardener. Can anyone post a pic of the pads and I'll try and label them!
• bambinobambino Posts: 789
edited 2008-02-11 02:06
Due to the lack of a picture and the fact that I can't remember exactly where they all where here is a shot of the pin connector on the bottom.

I used it with a continuity checker to locate the pad and then soldier!
As far a cross shorting goes, Im hopeing the nail hardener will provide some insulation.

Then thing I wanted you to verify is the signal pad, which I think you can see clear enough. I get continuity with the signal pin marked on the bottom30Pin shot as well as the pin to its left. If you can check this out on yours it would be a big help. Right now I'm afraid to power up and check anything!
I did have a short, got lucky, it still runs! I had to take off every wire to find it though. I think I'll just use the wires from the connector next time.

@RC
Yes there is a y/c input and the directions for it is in the datasheet Mike got us. Haven't tried it and since I've allready got this one geared towards NTSC I doubt I can help you more!
I do know that the pin we are sending the signal on becomes the luminence input!
