If I (doing something I shouldn't) put the video signal on the top of the resistor
given in Mike's diagram, and short the screen for a second causing a reboot
of the LCD, I get a very nice NTSC image for about a second. (in full color)
When the chip reboots, it sends an additional video signal to the screen
causing it to look much like the screen before. In my case, the graphics demo
goes from color to b/w with a hint of the blue post screen behind it.
If we can find the signal pin from the chip and kill it we should have a working
screen.
I think I'm going to go backwards and see if I can find the signal with my
monitor.

This is a new website I'm still working on. It's all a bit raw, and I haven't reassembled mine yet to show the finished picture, but trust me, it's really pretty. :) Yes, the link to the item at geeks (in my page) is an affiliate link, (Not hiding it) Figure the information might as well pay for itself with more hardware to hack.. (Had to really justify this to the wife... :)
I'll add pics of the working unit after I get the plugs soldered in and get it closed up.

It was the simplest method of removing the signal, and reduced power consumption.
I told you you were going to be a little shocked by the method..

Dang, I go and finally run down the signal(on pin 14 by the way) come back and you got a whole web page up displaying the hack.
Please don't enter the propeller contest,( "I need a fighting chance").
Just in case anyone wants to know, The shot below displays where the signal is coming from on the cable. Could save you haveing to run an extra wire up to the screen.
Found another good signal location without removing the LCD backpanel.
The bottom of resistor R61 (near the power plug) also is a good signal point.
I'll post an update later. Right now I'm going to get mine up and running.
Edit:
Page updated with the new information and pictures.

The more I look at this, the more it looks like an "nano" (cut-down) protoboard would
fit just fine inside the dvd door. Time to start looking over those button controls in the monitor side. The battery is 3.6v, which should be fine for running the propeller chip, drop in the nano, connect the video/audio lines, create a plug for the pda keyboard and you'll be all set.

Sweet Hack OBC, I have 2 coming my way, Just bought them lastnight. I had an Idea to create something like this using plexi glass. Good thing someone made one before I could.
It's better.
Changed to the link to the hack... Everything is there.

I'm using the 'standard' TV_TEXT object as delivered with the Propeller Tool. I've got a little 'video noise' on my display, but I believe this is due to the non-shielded hook-up wire that I'm currently using. Otherwise the display is crystal clear. @40 x 13 the text is tiny but readable.
I'm using the AiGeneric 40x24 video driver. (in PropDOS) Everything is a little tiny (expected) but extremely readable.

I can't get a tighter shot than this, but this is a shot with a DVD running.
My camera can't focus as tight as a shot at PropDOS, but I can read it clearly and there is no flicker.

Edit
Added a shot of propDOS.. My camera just can't focus this close (old), but
I'd say it's about twice as clear as the picture.

I wonder how long the battery would last playing an actual mini-dvd movie... All the new portable dvd players seem to advertize their play time. But, not a word in the write up for this thing...
I think I could DVDShrink a video down to the resolution of this monitor with no noticable quality loss and fit onto a mini-dvd. But, I bet the battery wouldn't last for 2 hours...
I'm torn now. I don't know if I should order me a TQFP to put in mine (OOh the waiting on UPS!) or just use my spin stamp(No waiting)
I already have a board cut and mounted to the sockets where the motor assembly was.
I'm working up to a timed test of both the prop and monitor working off the battery.

Have you checked for how many char/line and lines you can fit on that screen? Looks to be around 40 char/line by 12 lines or so.
Don't know how readable it is; when I enlarged view it wasn't very clear. What is the char size in pixels (height by width)?
Since I have one of those keypads, I can sense that player LCD is quite small. Good job at hacking the unit. Thanks for the view.
