Has anyone opened one of these to check for screen hack-ability for the prop?

It has an NTSC tuner. Therefore wouldn't it at least accept Propeller video in broadcast mode?

If is shouldn't have an AV input, the RF tuner is always a separate part and can easily be short curcuited

OldBit,

Yes I did get one and open it up. It doesn't expose an a/v port anywhere.

I have to go, but will post some pics of the guts latter.

The Lid has a 30Pin connector·to the base that contains the DVD motor, reader and power circuitry.
The top has 11 buttons, 2 speakers, and the Screen.
There is a head phones outlet, but know video!
It sure is a vivid screen though. If someone ever hacks it, please let me know!

I was afraid that what it would look like in there...

Shame too, a $20 monitor would go great with the .39 keyboard. :) :)

I've been searching for a pin out to the encoder chip, but no luck so far. SharpRB5P006AM.
From what I've read so far, It takes a baseband signal. If I only knew which leg to hi-jack the rest would be gravy train!

I'm tired of watching the Scooby-Doo movie on mine!

Looks like page 33 of the *.pdf document would be a place to start studying.........

This is something!

I just ordered 2... I'm hoping it makes for a cheap NTSC monitor... But, the datasheet mentions RGB in too.

Rayman, It is a scary thought, I know! This weekend I hopefully will have a chance to probe some of the lines and see which way they programmed it. Since the sales sheet for the DVD player mentioned NTSC, I am hopeing that they indeed did use that protocal.
FYI, There's a third alternative programming possible, Y/C.

OldBit,
I checked the Voltage on the switch pin, according to the data sheet page 10 It's in NTSC or Y/C mode, not RGB.
I can not However find where the composite in pin is linked to. It doesn't come straight out to the 30 pin connector.

Just a thought, Maybe we should drag this thread off into the sand box? What do you think?

That's actually a piece of good news as far as I'm concerned. The existing drivers should work with it.
Since this monitor can really only be used on the Propeller as opposed to STAMP, or SX, this seems a
reasonable place for the discussion, but that's up to the powers that be... :)

Ok then, Found the Vin input capacitor("labled C91 next to the 30 pin connector").
My Eye balls are burning pretty good by now, but I've locatated 8 pins that interface to it on the 30 pin connector.
From the picture orientation above there right to left, approximately at pin 5, 10, 15, 17, 19, 20, 21, 25. Like I said, it's late and last time thru I counted a 32 pin connector so I'm definately calling it a day!

If this works, all the controls can be accessed via spi interface. Tint, backlight, contrast, ho,ho.
Going to need to lay off of the coffe for a while before attacking that hirose cable too!

Ok, this is a really bad picture and a bad hack! I pumped in a propeller video signal on C91 and a ground connection. Looks like this is definitely hackable! Scooby-Doo was playing in the background...........

Here's a better look at those Signal pins.

Oldbit, Rayman
Any luck with USPS yet!

Edit; Removed signal pins, as they turned out to be Ground!

Mike,
I just went back thru to record which pins are ground and found the exact pins running to c91.
Can the signal be feed into ground? which side of c91 where you using!

See attached photo, pumped video signal in on C91, far end from the 30 pin connector, then used one of the round plate through holes on left side of the 30 pin connector for ground.

Have not done much with it since, too many 'honey doos'!

Sorry about that OldBit!
Thanks Mike, I guess I haven't found where the signal is coming from yet, back to the magnifying glass.
The signal from the DVD has to come thru that connector from the bottom some how, any chance it's using the y/c protocal to get it there. any way thanks for the pic. Noticed also, the unused, exposed pad next to c91 is also ground!

Either way, if we can figure what lines the screen needs from the bottom to stay alive, (power, ground, signal), then I can start removeing the circuit board from the bottom to make room for some payload.

OBC, I know this is only very loosely related but you might also be interested in this....

www.dealextreme.com/products.dx/category.606 'The OneStation' only $30

When I have completed my current projects I am going to have a go at connecting it to the prop.

It lends itself to a portable Hybrid/Hydra type console......

It's very hackable and of course it's 3V which is even better

My idea is to produce a cartridge with a prop, eeprom and micro sd card slot on there.

Datasheet here www.propgfx.co.uk/OS/TD025THEA3_Product_SPEC_0809.pdf

Still no luck finding the signal on the 30 pin Connector.

Here is the voltages I found on the Cable while powered up, not connected, and no DVD present.

Note: cable is upside down.

Also first 7 lines on left side are Button matrix lines

Mine arrived today.. One has already been broken down into parts.

I've extracted the DVD motor assembly without ill effects to the screen or startup settings.
Gonna have to locate a mirror for my shop table and hook up my magnifier to really
get into it.

I do wish I had two, that way I could go ahead with the scraping of parts I don't want. Alas I'm glad to have the one though.
