  Living below the Tropic of Cancer on an island has its advantages. Sure it is warm in the summer, but one never has to scrape ice off the windshield of their car to get to work. No freezing late night visits to the potty either. And typhoons assure that there will never be a drought.
  
  If southern Taiwan is too much of a change for you, Hawaii is actually one degree further south.

  It's about 23 F and currently snowing here in Mississippi. I think this is only the third or fourth time I've had snow at home since moving from Kentucky in 1997. I did see tons of it when I made a lot of business trips to Pennsylvania about 10 years ago though.

  -and I believed that we Norwegians were the ones who had it cold. Even up north it is above 0F.

  That's nuttin' At my house this morning when I left for work at 5am it was -28. I live out in the country and it's typically 10 or so degrees colder than in the city. By the way, that's not wind chill, it's actual temp. I don't even look at wind chill because when I go out - EVERYTHING is covered!
  Edit: But tomorrow it's supposed to get up to 24 ABOVE. We've had that kind of roller coaster all winter. 24 above tomorrow, then single digits and teens for highs through next week. That is still way below normal for Western Wisconsin.

  Funny, though, after a bunch of this stuff this winter, I hardly notice the difference between -14 and -28. I'm kinda bothered by that...

  It's like when I lived in Minneapolis for a couple year. One bright, sunny Sunday morning after a cold snap, I put on my light nylon windbreaker, walked the block or so to the corner store to get a newspaper. When I got back to my apartment, I heard on the radio that it was 14 degrees. I had felt perfectly comfortable outside.....it does make you wonder!
  
  That was the same winter I flew from Minneapolis to Orlando - it was -54 wind chill when I left and 86 degrees when I landed in Orlando.....talk abut messing with the mind and body!

  Jeepers, you guys are making me feel guilty. It's like a different world out here in Los Angeles. Temps are 50-80 every day. Not a drop of rain since forever. I've biked to work and run at lunch every day this year. I'm way ahead of schedule to keep my 2014 resolution to run 1000 miles and bike 5000.

  -18F last night in Illinois while visiting the folks. I tried to measure it with my BOE, DS1822 and an LCD this morning at -10F. It worked good till the hardware started going below zero. It seemed like the power for the LCD was the challenge. First, I tried a 9v transistor battery then the laptop. (Ironically, the laptop also stopped working well as it cooled.) Not much experience with cold weather design but I image there are some design guidelines for this. (P.S. Maybe someone from a warmer climate should post warm temps)

  Speaking of Pennsylvania, here in Meadville PA it was -9 this morning at my house although the external temperature sensor in my car was showing -18. The local weatherman on TV said it was -7 so take your pick

  Well, it has been cold here in Kaohsiung, just not as cold. ... about 17 degrees, Centigrade. I need to put on a t-shirt under my regular shirt, and the heavy duvet is on the bed. Nobody has central heating in Kaohsiung, only air conditioning. So I have to run a little 1200 watt heater, which the dog sleeps next to.

  Usually the screen doors make a different squeek when the temperature is 0F or below. I think the high yesterday was -10F with the low about -22F. I had enough layers on for snow shovelling so I started to worry about sweating. I could really feel the chill at the gaps in the layers like the cuffs of my gloves. It's hard to believe, but the predictions are for a lot of 90F+ days starting in only a few (4-5) months.

  Here in Astoria Queens it is 17 degrees. And we still have some snow on the ground from the last big snow storm that nearly toppled the guy who claims to run the sanitation department.
  
  Now if you want snow erco, I can recommend a location in the Cascade mountains. Just be careful of the owner, he's a very bored Siberian Tiger.

  This isn't today but this is what SNOW really looks like in Ohio. (I'm not sure what that stuff you are seeing is! )

  Even though it has been cold and the southern states is one big ice skating rink I remember a colder winter in the 70's. In Erie PA there was a week when the high was 3 and the low was -17 and it was so cold that most businesses and schools closed down to conserve on the natural gas usage so homes could use it to keep warm.

  Probably "The Great Blizzard of1978" I remember it well. In Louisville, there was a (then) record snowfall on January 17, but less than a week later another huge blizzard hit the upper Midwest. Louisville didn't get quite as much snow from that one but farther north it was pretty bad.
  
  Strangely enough on January 17, 1994, exactly 16 years to the day after the 1978 record snowfall, that record was broken (but just barely). I also remember another winter in between those, maybe 1985, when there was another huge snowstorm that brought extremely low temperatures, around -24 F. I think that was in January also.

  We only worked about 45 - 50 minutes at a time, then had a coffee/tea-break and a chance to swap out wet glowes and stuff.

  I remember one winter in Eugene, Oregon where it snowed four feet and no snow plows were available. It was the week before final exams and nobody could study. It doesn't take much to cause mayhem if no snow removal equipment is available. If you must drive long distances, take a down sleeping bag with you to sleep in the car safely. Running the engine risks carbon monoxide poisoning and leaves you with no fuel.

  In the upper midwest where I live, we currently have a shortage of propane and natural gas. Partially due to a couple of pipeline explosions in Canada and lots of propane use by farmers drying extra wet corn last season.
  Last fall, I was yukking it up when I paid only $1.44/gallon for my propane pre-buy. Now I'm really sweating to stay within the 1200 gallons that I bought so I don't have to pay the current $4.00+/gallon. My supplier says I have about 1 1/2 fills left so I think I'll be in good shape. Knock on wood!

  14 below in 2014.... hmmm. I guess people will be talking about the winter of '14 for some time to come. Of course if you live in Chicago, you might never thaw out.
