Company Names you find that don't make any sense...

While browsing the Good Ole' Amazon.com today I noticed some companies that sell product. What was interesting is the name some companies chose. When you really think about the name, sometimes they don't make much sense. It will go like this, state the company name, and give a brief description of why you think it makes no sense, or at least no sense to yourself. I'll start...

Apple Inc:
  • Name of a fruit found all over the world that is used in most every type of pie, cake, or pastry.
  • Sells uber expensive and proprietary products, defeating the one thing apples are: everywhere.
  • Apple Inc makes no sense to me as a name because it has absolutely nothing to do with fruit and goes against all things that an apple is: everywhere, variety, plentiful, healthy.
So what say you...?

I was always amazed that someone would call their company "Fluke". I can't imagine going to the bank and asking for a business loan.

    Cox Cable/Cox Communications Inc.!

I work with people all over the world who are not familiar with them and hear the phonetic. I usually just say Cox then there's a moment of silence. I'm sure any further explanation here would violate forum rules. Big conference calls are the best, everyone shuts up.

I once had to move part of my business activity to Canada temporarily (long story). Of couse, I had to get a business license and provide a business name. The authorities were not satisfied with just any old name. It had to be descriptive of the business activity. Apple Computers would probably pass muster. Amazon? Um, not so much. What do they do? Brazilian river guiding? Archery supplies for women?

Fluke does seem especailly bad, since it can refer either to an unlikely chance occurance or to a parasitic flatworm. Yuck! But their logo is nice and squarish, which would seem to negate chance or anything organic:

I will have to take a picture of a place I am thinking of next time I am down in Auburn, WA. Not sure of the name, but I find it oddly suspicious that there is a Teriyaki fast food joint right next to a Veterinary Clinic!!!!!!

Virgin Airlines!!! If it was there first time, would you fly them?

    In & Out Burgers. EXACTLY!!!

    Clearly this wins.

I've also thought that a local electronics/computer store named, "Iguana Micro" never made much sense. Because I live in Oregon. In the Pacific Northwest. Miles and miles and miles away from any iguanas. That's like opening a snow-boarding shop in Florida. I mean honestly...

Ok I have a new one. Just saw an alcoholic beverage described on the label as, "THC Energy Drink." My first thought was, an upper & a downer at the same time. Imagine the potential lawsuits...

With all the fruit computer companies/products, one bright Japanese company was intent in releasing their "fruit" computer to be called the LEMON. Was extremely difficult for my friend to persuade them this was a bad idea!

Then there was the Wang slogan... Wang Cares (think about it)

Or over the weekend, the sign
    HIGH SCHOOL
    SPORTS FIELD
    CEMETARY
for all those who passed away playing sports at high school?
Too slow to get a photo :(

There is a certain manufacturer of fridges and freezers called "Smeg". Which might disturb our English-English speakers.
Check out their "Cooking with Smeg" pages: http://www.smeg.com/recipes/

Not a company name, but rather an unfortunate layout of signage in their windows.
    IMAG0272x.jpg

Viewed head on, the sign reads Chili - Hot Dog - Teriyaki, but as you drive by and given the shape of the windows, the first thing you see is "Dog Teriyaki". Bleah!

Fact is sometimes stranger than fiction. I'm in Boca Raton, FL and there's a Peter Glenn snowboard shop a mile away and at least 5 more between here and Miami. Snow sports are HUGE in FL - shops, clubs, organized trips, etc. I think people just want to get away from sun and surf and swimming and diving and such.

I admit it took me a while before I got it. But I didn't get it until I thought about it with an Aussie accent.

In Billings, MT. the owner actually changed these to I believe "Jackson's" due to controversy.

Yes, but if your name was John Fluke, the bank would probably not be too worried.

Around where I live, we have Accurate Trash Removal.
What precisely does it mean for a trash removal service be "accurate"?

I am surprised this one has not been mentioned...Microsoft. This is only a half truth. They do not sell tiny pillows or blankets.

And they most certainly don't make micro-sized software!

And you also have Sun Microsystems. What part of their hardware is micro? I guess if you consider the "Micro" chip then it all makes sense!!! Microslop would have been a better one.

And then there's "Obamacare". Oops, not a Company.

I tend to pause when I see "US Robotics". I want a company to come along that makes robots to be called "Crappy Analogue Modems" so they can do a name swap.

That's because everyone knows it was a spelling error, an error generated by their own word-processing software. The intended name was MegaShaft.
