Recieved an email from Horizion, the company that is handling the web based "idea submissions" for the spill...
    Dear Michael Rector,
Thank you so much for taking the time to think about and submit your proposed solution regarding the Horizon incident. Your submission has been reviewed for its technical merits. A similar approach has already been considered or planned for possible implementation. All of us on the Horizon Support Team appreciate your thoughts and efforts.
    Sincerely yours,
    Horizon Support Team

The hay is not going to stop the leak. I say blow the frikking thing to shreds and see what happens!!!!

Seriously, I know that will not work, but it was my first thought. I agree with AJM, every idea, no matter what it is will take time. REDUNDANTCY. Once it is stopped, ALL offshore wells need to have backup systems in place to be backups for the backups.

Don't laugh. That's probably where the original microbes were isolated from. Believe it or not, there are many species of bacteria that live miles underground.

That's a bit worrying seeing as we are pumping up oil from the depths of the earth, perhaps there are bacterium that are yet to be discovered below the crust that could be potentially harmful to humans and animal life on the surface that we may not have a medical solution for?

Well, if you need something else to worry about, there are lots of microbes melting out of the ice caps that haven't been in circulation for a 100,000 years or so. In fact I think the oldest ice is estimated to be several million years old. And, yes, there are living microbes frozen in thawing out of there.

As for the BP disaster: the latest thing I've heard is that the well casing itself is probably failing and the blow out preventer is actually tilting 10 degrees or so because the rock which is holding it up is eroding away. And it's possible that the oil is leaking not just up through the borehole but also into the geologic formation all around, so oil might be leaking into the ocean from a multitude of various, distant places not seen or measured by the robots. A failed casing puts a frowny face on any ideas of using an explosion to crimp the casing since the casing has become uncemented from the surrounding rock, so you can crimp the casing all you want but you'll still have a direct path for oil to escape from. That probably explains why BP's stock has plunged so much: although perhaps hard to fathom, this disaster is a lot worse than what people originally thought. Previous comparisons to Chernobyl might not be too far off. freaked.gifmad.gifshocked.gifsad.gifcry.gif

I think crimping off the pipe would just push the well casing out of the ocean floor. This would make a real mess.

Yes, you're absolutely right: attempting to crimp the casing at this stage of the game would probably only make things worse. But I still haven't been able to figure out how a crimping force performed early on would have pushed the well casing out of the ocean floor. Using cylindrical coordinates: How would a force applied radially to a casing (in the r direction) translate into a force working along the length of the casing (in the z direction)?

A lot of activity on video feeds today as they are preparing for a new cap. They have some expert drivers on those ROV's.

This might help to understand why the relief wells are needed. see attachment below

I think BP should have had these relief wells already in place or at least two drill rigs ready to go in case the main drill rig had a problem, LIKE BLOWING UP

BP knew what would be needed if the main drill rig failed (1979 drill rig blows up)·And they did not take steps to prevent such a disaster in 2010.

I think the high ranking officials of BP should be arrested on criminal negligents and should spend some time with Bubba. After Bubba shows them the irresponsible oil drilling technique-over and over, I think they will get the hang of tapping natural resources with some responsibility

I forget the time frame they were talking about, but I heard a commentator saying that over a certain period BP had committed over seven hundred safety violations, while the rest of the oil industry all together had experienced 7 or 8. Seems like circumstancial evidence they were operating in an unsafe manner.

I saw CNN's live video feed of the new cap BP put on their infamous well, and it cracks me up that they have at least 3 robot cameras doing apparently nothing but watching pressure dials on the well. I'm astonished they have no better data acquisition system than watching grainy video of poorly illuminated dials. Maybe these guys really don't have any business drilling that deep. Apparently their available technology that deep in the ocean relies on 1960's technology.

Even the feds state "without BP, we can't solve this". What the heck kind of message is that?
I'm guessing that based on what I've read so far, the drunk captain is going to end up looking like an upstanding citizen, between laxy regulators, lax internal controls, lack of oversight, etc.

Some to be sure, but one has to question the level of "enthusiasm" for any outside ideas. Even the feds state "without BP, we can't solve this". What the heck kind of message is that?
