What are the chances some of us will start receiving assembled break out boards by next weekend?

Depends on how quick james long can get to assembling but I doubt by halloween. First week of November is more likely.

Hate to say it, but the second or third week is much more likely.

We have two large runs in progress at the moment. One is a 100 board run, and the other is a 500 board run. I may be able to squeeze the breakout boards in between those runs, so it is possible.

We have been covered up with work for the last few weeks.

Well....not so sure about that. Most of the work has been "cut tape" jobs which are extremely frustrating. They take a long time, and the profit isn't that great, but money is money.

We are starting to put limits on how much cut tape a job can have. The customer will save a bunch of money in the end, with the coming restrictions (if they purchase reels).

FYI there are services that will put cut-tape on reels and attach a leader/trailer. It's been a few years since I checked, but I believe cost is $25-$50 per reel. Assuming those prices are still accurate, it's still cheaper to buy an entire reel of most resistors and capacitors.

I can get custom reels for $7 but it takes 2 weeks.

The lt3593 I can get full reel if I could sell 300 at $2.50 each.

The tsc2003 though is $7087 for a reel and I only need $400 worth

    Matt,

I was not referring to the breakouts.

We just did a job with 37 cut tapes. Each tape a different part.

Well this is nothing like that. I got reels coming for the caps and resisters.

There is very little part count.

The problem with cut tapes, is not the tapes themselves, it's when they are combined with 50 individual boards (each separate), that is when cut tapes are no fun.

How do you put parts from 37 different cut tapes on 50 different boards........well.....you get creative. But that is a different thread entirely.

    Sorry for hijacking the thread.

I'll try to keep everyone apprised of where we stand on the assembly...to know when Matt will get them back.

Fedex says that most of the parts and PCB have arrived to James Long. The Touch Decoders where sent by UPS they are apparently going to arrive later today.

James any chance you can take some pics of the panels and upload them here?

    Matt,

We'll try to get some pictures. They will be from a webcam, so the quality won't be great. Our nice 12 MP digital camera died last year, and we haven't replaced it.

Thanks for the heads up about the touch decoders.

EDIT: The picture is attached. Taken in a hurry.....but the potential customers should get an idea of the size. It should be noted, there are quite a few boards per panel.

    Matt,

No worries about the bad boards. We tell the P&P to skip those, and it will skip over them without a hitch.

Also....for anyone who wants one directly from us. We do not share any information to outside sources. We consider our customer's (and their customer's) information extremely confidential.

Well.....Matt and I will need to discuss how to handle this. Because I do not have a display, there is no way to test full functionality, which is the real test.

I'll make everyone a deal, if you get a board that doesn't function correctly because of the part placement (solder, bridges, etc.), I'll fix it for free.

When I said a few were not made correct I was talking about the fact there is marker scratching out a few. I pay to have the boards electrically tested by fab shop to prevent me placing parts on bad boards.

I have two on order, but you can ship them later, if someone else is pushing you.
I have no hurry... Sparkfun's Graphic LCD 160x128 HUGE is still refusing to obey. With little time available I would say I can wait a little more for the boards...

Here is an update on the breakout boards.

The parts are here, and the boards are here.

We are having trouble with the stencil. The stencil supplier I went with, sent one, but it doesn't fit the board correctly. I have contacted him, and after a lengthy discussion, he decided he could not correctly cut the stencil. He provided a refund for the stencil.

I have since contacted my second stencil supplier, and seeing what he can come up with. I'm expecting to hear something from him today or tomorrow. If he can make the stencil correctly, it will be about three days before I get the stencil. After that, it will take me a day to do the boards.

We are playing the waiting game at this moment. If that falls through, we are left with the only option of a metal stencil. A metal stencil is a lot more expensive. If we must go that route, the company will probably share the cost of the stencil with Matt. It is the only fair thing to do. We gave him a quote, so we are trying to uphold our end of the agreement.

I will try to keep everyone updated as to the status.
