Sweet!! (And yeah, you will remember it too!)

I'm remembering back to that age. I was given a Tek tube O-Scope, good to 60Mhz, computer hardware, HAM transmitter, various bits and pieces and spent the next few years just doing stuff.

It made such an impact that I'm back at this point in my life, after a long step sideways doing engineering software applications engineering and systems, jumping on my Prop kits every moment I get. Sadly, it's not as many moments as I would like, but I'm happy for each of them. Each time I know something new, and feel that spark started so many years ago.

My point Microcontrolled is that your position in life right now is simply golden! You've got tons of free time, a young mind and creative drive. Go forth and do stuff!! Now is the time. I've heard that our genius is in our youth. I'm reluctant to say that, because I see many people at all ages doing, building, thinking and it all appears to play out the same. The perception of genius comes down to simple time and will. You've got both, and that is what makes this time for you just golden. Enjoy!!

I will add that skills you acquire now will likely never, ever fade, and it's easiest now too. This is a good path because it's relevant, and will continue to remain that way for the foreseeable future.

Ken, it's not drawing attention at all --at least I don't see it that way. Perfectly rational. Good on you guys for just being rational and passionate. Seeing this kind of stuff going on just makes me happy.

It's the same kind of happy I had working with First Robotics students this year. We had a group that saw some sponsorship through the company I work for.

My task was getting them up and running on CAD, and helping with computer fundamentals. I had a blast working with them, and we all learned a lot. Their Robot made it to nationals and placed well too. IMHO, this kind of thing really is our future. Seen that way, a little give back here and there will pay off huge in 10 - 20 years or so.

@OBC: Yes, I do have a couple of projects planned. (Really, I have quite a few.)

@potatohead: I realized this 2 years ago. That these are the perfect days to do this; while i'm young. I am also homeschooled, so I can basicly spend almost all my free day doing electronics and programming!(and playing with my brother and my 3 sisters; I have to share my time after all) smile.gif I have heard of the First Robotics students, it is neat that you work with them.

@unsoundcode: Yes, everyone is unselfish that I have recieved this prize; special honor to potatohead for splitting up his portion of the prize among other winners. I don't have any friends here at home so it's nice to know that I can rely on the forum members for my freinds.

@microcontrolled - a natural and cool way to make new friends is to share a common interest. One of my (now) life long friends and I were both interested in HAM radio when we first met. It only took a couple of seconds to realize we both were learning about radios. I had built my first crystal radio - he had too and had made an "advance" he was really enthusiastic about. His enthusiasm was immediately contagious. He invited me over and showed me the "advance" he'd made --- he and his dad had strung a long wire out his window. Hooked to a tree, the antenna could pull in more signals...

There might be some cool clubs in your town... HAM radio isn't the only thing... yes, robotics is popular. The local library people might know --- or you can even call the City Manager's office and ask them.
If there's no club or group, maybe you can start your own.

You see what is really going on here at the forum? Right! We love what we do... we support each other with our enthusiasm. Why else would someone go to the trouble to type up long lines of code, or read someone else's code, figure out an electronic problem, etc? Indeed, it's because the sharing of enthusiasm is like a big fire: once it starts, you can't put it out --- and it spreads quickly.

Catch on fire, my friend, catch on fire!

cheers,
Howard

@CounterRotatingProps: I live in a very small town (Lewisburg, WV). I have looked for years for someone whom I share the same interest. However, I have found nobody. On the other side of the county there is a First Robotics team at a high school, but that is about an hour away. I sould try the library, they might know someone or some group.

Refers to a scene in the movie "Spartacus" starring Kirk Douglas as Spartacus. After the army of former Roman slaves led by Spartacus is defeated in battle by legions of the Roman army, a Roman general stands before the captured surviving members of the slave army and demands that they turn over Spartacus, or else all of the former slaves will be executed. Upon hearing this and not wanting his friends to be executed, Spartacus stands up and says "I am Spartacus." However, the loyalty of his friends is so great that each of them stands forward in succession, shouting "I am Spartacus!" until the shouts dissolve into a cacophony of thousands of former slaves each insisting "I am Spartacus!" Bewildered and still not knowing which of them is Spartacus, but impressed by the loyalty he inspires in his army, the Roman general has all of the slaves crucified in a miles-long display alongside the Appian Way leading back to Rome.

Thus the phrase "I am Spartacus!" is often used to humorously start a chorus of responses of "No, I am Spartacus" among a group.
Person enters chat room and types "I am Spartacus."

100 other people in the chat room then respond with "No, I am Spartacus!", "I am Spartacus!", etc.

@Microcontrolled, unless you are the *only* person in your small town :)) I'll bet there are others who are interesting in parallel things... maybe not *exactly* the same, but similar enough to share ideas ....and then you learn neat stuff you'd not thought about before. Yes, do try the library. They are glad·to help with more than just books.· Still, you might have to work at finding people... maybe put up a poster on the library bulletin board (of course, make sure your parents are cool with that first :)

microcontrolled,

Maybe the folks near where you live just don't know that they would be interested in electronics, computers and even robotics if they had a chance to be exposed to them. Your local public library, as suggested earlier, might be the perfect place to start. Maybe you could offer to display one or several of the new projects you'll be building with your booty and tie it in a range of books offered by the library on technical and scientific subjects.

I do some volunteer work at our public library (just helping to keep the public access computers running) and the number of library visitors has been going up rather sharply with the worsening economy.

Congrats and good luck,

I have bought a lot stuff from a Lot of different Places on the web and locally where·I live

I have also work in and with customer service for many year

You do not find very many company's now a days that customer service· is first any more

If you have a problem with something you·would be Lucky to get any help· and if you get·any help it is·as little as possible

What I like about PARALLAX is that if you have Problem with something that you bought or with Billing or shipping or what every your problem·is they WILL·take care of you

This includes the Tech support line

This is the BIGGEST reason why I keep buying from them

Because I know that if you a problem you will not be·left hanging

There is one web store that I order from which·I will not name but when you order from them and you email them you may or may not get an

email back from and GOD help you if you have a problem with something you may be out of luck·There are·NO phone #s list on there web page

Also some·of there·Web Link like to your account info is broken and has been that way for a very long time Also when you place an order with them

It take two week to get·to you· When I do order from them I pay with Pay Pal Credit Card·Just is case something gose wrong ·cry.gif

Now this a big DIFFERENT isn't it

I want to THANK PARALLAX for having a GREAT Company···· smile.gif

That is one of the many reasons that I order only from parallax. I ordered from somewhere else JUST ONCE and the item I ordered didn't work. Forget about tech support, they told that you could only E-mail them: they couldn't have there phone lines tied up with "less important" calls!!!!

Hi All,
just wanted to let everyone know what I ended up getting - the box of goodies arrived today hop.gif

Thanks·to "Potatohead," who generiously donated his winnings to all the other winners.

And·thanks again to Ken and Jim at Parallax for their wonderful support.
I already had·high marks for Parallaxfor many reasons ... they've gone up another notch or two!

Last, but, as they say, not least, thanks to everyone in this thread who offered valuable suggestions, which, as you see, did influence my decision:

1. Propeller Professional Development Board - a very well made, well thought out board.
2. Viewport Standard - this is a cool, must have piece of software. KUDO's to Hanno! Can't wait to see what he comes up with next.
3. Two Prop. Hat Decals - one for me, one for the back of my truck· ~~·|=(8-))
4. More goodies I bought for a pet Prop. project: two servos, a prop proto usb, bistep controller, and misc chips...

Cheers

I just got my kit on saterday, demo board and PE Lab kit. I have already worked halfway through the PE Lab book and I have several great ideas for projects.

@potatohead & Jazzed: I DIDN'T EVEN REALIZE WHAT YOU DID POTATOHEAD & JAZZED!!!! I just saw that I had won some money and that was it!!!!!! Now that I look back I see that JAZZED was the reson that I won any money at all!!!!! THANK YOU JAZZED AND POTATOHEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. @ CounterRotatingProps: is viewport worth the money? I might buy it but it is a whopping $60 for standard, at what more features does Ultimate have to be 3X as much? It will be easyer to troubleshoot my prop with this but i'm just asking is it worth the money?

You could download the trial verson of ViewPort and see. From what I can tell, it is fantastic. I am waiting to buy the ultimate version when I have the money. You can also upgrade on the ViewPort site - if I remember correctly.

[big grin here]

@microcontrolled -- Think nothing of it. When I was your age, people gave me some stuff and I had some great times and learned a lot. Clearly you are doing the same, and that's worth it. Like I wrote before, now is the time! As you get older stuff happens. Sometimes that stuff takes a lot of your free time. Best get the most out of the time you have right now. Just don't forget to have fun, and it's all good.

@CounterRotatingProps -- You are welcome.

I've got my projects cooking and the gear I need to get through them. Anything else would just sit, so why bother when somebody else can jam on the stuff? :)

Yep. I entered college as a freshman this year, and I had a goal to finish my robot by Christmas. Well, it's now summer a year later and I'm still not done... College murders your free time (there are some benefits though :) ).
