maybe the build a box is just in time? Why not generalize the idea into a "generic-kit-box?" Like lego's for DYI boxes? I've had to reveiw a ton of enclosures in the last year (just for qty 2 ! :-( and have not seen much like the idea... there are a few stackables and snap togethers, maybe I've not looked in the right places.
For example, how about combining the apple-look-alike box with the build-a-box? I mean, have (keyboard) slopped front as an optional attachment to the generic box.
Another suggestion: avoid the spaces if possible and just have gasket, ring-like inserts. I'd drill & thread holes just in the corners, with a screwhead recess for the top and bottom. Sell only stainless screws... you could then goop silicon or whatever to make them water tight (Submersable Generic Boxes? :) Or, not as good maybe, for dry use, make the holes larger and use a set of nylon (teflon ?) bushings that insert into these hole, with the bolt/screw inserted in turn into the bushings.
And, who knows, maybe you could line the boxes with ~ gold foil ~ and have a radiation-hardened, generic Ready-for-the-Moon-Box!
cheers and good luck here on Earth and towards the Stars...

·The propeller "apple box " prototype is done! If It was not for the fact that Ken Gracey said I was a "trustworthy person" ,·I would have given up on it a long time ago ( I have alot of junk parts to prove it). I ended using UHMW for the box, the recycle plastic was junk to work with. I'm still having issues with the sliding lid and getting a good finish . I think those proplems can be worked out by building fixtures if demand requires. As far as price goes , I was hoping to keep them under $100 and I still might be able to do that if intrest is strong(I have to buy to plastic by the sheet).

OBC,
Your "apple II box " shipped today , keep in mind that it is a "prototype". I had to do away with the sliding lid on this one to keep my sanity(there are only so maney chunks of $$ plastic you can throw away before you give up).

OBC,
Yours will be a collectors item .It takes to much time and material to make one to be able to sell them at a reasonable cost. I wish I had a way of making them cheaper.

Shame... In that case I'll have to come up with something very special for this unit.
(It arrived today) I'm thinking that 4 Protoboards could make a very interesting computer. :)
BTW, what where your thoughts about attaching the keyboard? bits of velco, or did you
have an idea there?
It looks just beautiful! I'll have to make sure I get something cool in it before the next Expo.
Brian, if you are really looking for a need to fill may I suggest you make two good motor mounts.
One for the typical geared motor. As of present, only Linuxmotion makes a mount for these and it really is lightweight. I have four of these geared motors, but no mounts. It would not hurt to provide a wheel assembly for the same.
I am thinking that the above should be hefty enough to carry a couple of kilos of gel cell batteries. That is the short coming of the Linuxmotion bracket.
For the second motor mount, a Nema 17 stepper motor mount that would allow it to either drive wheels directly or to sit adjacent to the wheel and drive the wheel by friction to the tread. The latter design would allow people to use existing wheels and axle combinations that could carry huge loads. One can buy a large selection of wheels and casters for cart that are rated for very large payloads, like wheel barrel wheels. The latter design might also be adapted to chain drive.

·Maybe build-a-box is ahead of it's time.
OBC,
·Here is a $9.00 chunk of recycled plastic·,I have to think that there is·a propeller box hiding there somwhere.

Brian,
A quick question or two... you mentioned that it's recycled plastic. Is it some kind of HDPE?· Can it hold a medium-fine tap, say 6-32 or 8-32?
This thing looks cool, practical -and the milling
thanks,

Were you able to determine a method of manufacturing these for sale,
or was this one-off the end of the line for this box design?
The pics look fantastic. I'm betting some Krylon Fusion paint will adhere nicely to these.
