FYI,
·North Star Machining will soon be offering the Qaud rover for sale. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CKO67FwFhc
·It will have the full line of Parallax products pre installed (propeller, gps ·ping sensors). I am developing a full line of add on’s to go with it (tracks, robotic arm, and gas powered self starting motor). I have been talking with Ken for the past couple of months and would like to thank him for giving me a shove out of the nest to bring this product forward.

Thanks' Whit,
It didn't seem that long ago that I was pulling my hair out trying to mill one axel bracket out on my taig mill. Man what a differnce a good mill makes. It was 2 weeks ago today that I auctioned off my truck repair business. But,

Hey guys,

Brian has niche capabilities that should serve the Parallax customer base well. He's proposed a very reasonable rate to get started, for certain. And most importantly he's a trustworthy person who will aim to deliver what you want. Brian has truly ventured out to do what he wants to do, leaving behind a successful truck repair business.

If you've got a manufacturing product in mind, give him a try. The only reason we haven't sent him some work so far is because we just added CNC capabilities this last year, but if we have excess demand then we'd send the work his way. In the meantime we'll be supporting him any way we can to help get his own designs off the ground.

Brian,

An idea.. This might appeal to many here (at least on the Propeller side)
How about a casing that would hold two of the Propeller Protoboards,
(or one Protoboard, and one perf the same size)
with a sloped front for one of those mini ps2 keyboards common on Ebay?

Something that was about 8-12" wide, 4" tall at the highest point, with plenty
of room in the back to cut in jacks, etc and strong enough for top mounted
solderless breadboards and small LCD screens.

I post this idea here (as opposed to PM), as I'm hoping some others would also agree
that this would be a product they would purchase, and it looks like
you've definitely got the gear to build.

Brian,

Yes, same basic design but smaller..
Two Protoboards sitting side-by-side inside with maybe just an inch more on the sides.
The keyboard would be something like this..

That would work perfectly! (I forgot they had those!)

The basic design could mimic the Apple II case in approx 1/3 scale.
I suspect it would be perfect! The top being able to be pulled
away and strong enough to have a small LCD screen (like my little 7")
or a breadboard tied into the units inside.

Can this be done?

Why 2 prototype boards?

Maybe the Propeller Demo board instead since it already has the VGA, Mouse and Keyboard ports.

Brian,

Yes, that is the starting point. How can I turn down an offer like this?!! :)

Side by side protoboards, or protoboard and 1 perf board of the same size.
Can't imagine why mounting points for the demoboard shouldn't be included as well.

Something I've been thinking about is the method of connecting outside items
to inside boards. In the Apple, I've seen both small cables with M/F connectors
to go from the board to the back of the case. I've also seen cables simply
pushed through the holes in the back directly to the cards. I think either of
these methods would be fine in this case as well, as it would allow max flexibility.

One part I can't wrap my head around is the mounting of the keyboard.
Are you thinking of opening the Parallax keyboard and designing a mount for it?
Or just using an epoxy or double-stick adhesive to attach it to the slope side?

Another potential method for mounting the keyboard would be to remove screws from the back of it (assuming there are screws in the back) and the using a longer screw through a mounting plate and then into the hole of the removed screw. I saw this method used on some rackmount keyboard units once. I thought it was clever.

[blinks] Unbelievable! Can you do it in black plastic with snap-on lid?

What are the measurements on this and estimated price per unit?
I've also seen that idea with the longer screws, should work fine for this.
