Stingray Robot

Got out my Stingray and ran it around the house tonight avoiding obstacles with its 3 Pings))) - it has feedback on an LCD display. I removed the left and right facing Ping)))s shown in this photo.

What a fun robot this is! I want to give it a try with some BlocklyProp code soon. This version has the original motors (and I have some motor for it with a lower gear ratio).

Always a favorite platform of mine, and one of the best-looking robots ever. Keep it up, Boss.

Any video, or need I simply be a Belieber?
  • WhitWhit Posts: 4,191
I will get you some video! But blessed are those who believe without needing to see.

Attached is the update Spin code.

    Without a doubt, Thomas! :)

  • Nice! I happened to be digging through my bench and saw my Stingray tonight as well, tucked away in a drawer. Still setup with the MDF plates I made for it. I was also thinking about my Rocka as well, which is a miniature Stingray. Never finished that one either...

I might have to try out your code....

    Please do!
  • Hey, where can I get a stingray?
  • I love the two I got from Chris as well. If you have a good way to do Blockly on it, please let me know, I think my daughter would get into that more! Heck, I think that would be super fun, actually.
  • Hey, where can I get a stingray?

The Stingray was obsoleted back in 2013. They are an endangered species and not often seen in the wild anymore. It's been about 3 years since I saw one on eBay. I won mine at the Parallax Expo in 2011. The second link in my post above is for a thread with more details why they were discontinued.

We three Pings of Parallax are...
    Bearing south we traverse afar
    Programmed by our Brother Whit
    We navigate bit by bit

    Oh... :):):)
  • You never fail to come up with something, if is isn't some cool stuff, it's poetry.

    Haiku:

    Three Parallax Pings
    Yield Obstacle Avoidance
    Using BlocklyProp

    Sounds quite impressive
    Your still photos are lovely
    But I yearn for more

    Need video soon
    Or else it never happened
    My good friend Sir Whit

    erco,

Put your finger here and touch my button, see my LCD display - do not doubt, but believe. Just to clarify, this is running Spin code (not BlocklyProp yet). Notice the brief appearance of my daughter's foot at the end of the second video. According to her, robots are very noisy early on Saturday morning.

    My word and my goodness!

Amen, Brother Whit, for you have made a belieber out of me!

And know that father Ken forgives you for not using BlocklyProp!

My Stingray robot is named "Freddie", here are 3 pictures of what it looked like in 2013.
Below is a Picture of my stingray with Pololu "100:1 Metal Gearmotor 37Dx73L mm with 64 CPR Encoder" installed
    ZappBot-Freddie-Robot-2013-06-27%2016.12.00-1600x950-Logo-Text.jpg

It uses a Pololu Orangutan SVP-1284 Robot Controller https://pololu.com/product/1327

It currently has a laser cut plywood top plate, and 20 Volt DeWalt Li-on battery for power.
I need to find (or take) a photo of what it looks like now.

Such a spacious hallway. I wish I had room in my tiny LA house to test such a wonderful obstacle avoidance routine!

    Oh give me a home
    Where my Stingray can roam
Where my S3 and AB can play
Where never are heard, these discouraging words:
"Daddy, please put your robots away"

@zappman - Love Freddie! Really like the ping in the tail wheel space!

    @erco -

    If you want a home
    Where your Stingray can roam
Where your S3 and AB can play
I'll give you a word, that you've already heard:
"Fix up that ole Corvair today!"

@Whit : Your bloomberg link led me to this site, which can show you any car in movies & TV. Pretty cool!

Early model Corvairs were the official car of Ultraman's Science Patrol circa 1966. Plenty good for me! Jump to 5:00:

  • Anybody have a source for the metal bumpers, (under the PING's), in Whit's post #1? I measured the width and it is 2" on center. All I can find after weeks of searching is 2-1/2" center. I guess I could file a quarter on each side, but don't want to if I don't have to.

McMaster Carr. I will search for more info. See https://forums.parallax.com/discussion/117075/mech-drawing-for-stingray-robot and https://www.mcmaster.com/1726a43

    @Publison - Go, go, go!

The horizontal slot Whit used would work with a bumper (drawer handle) up to 2-1/4" centers, but it does look like Whit's is 2" in the photo. I don't find either in a quick Google search though. You can pay McM-C's price, or file just 1/8" on either side for your 2.5 incher.

Thanks Whit! I usually go to McMaster for hard to find hardware. Don't know why I did think of it this time.

I hate to file a virgin Stingray. :)

They look like ordinary kitchen cupboard/drawer handles, so you may want to try Home Depot or similar hardware stores. Might also consider using two knobs instead and bring back the "big chrome bumper bullet" look.

Been to HD, Lowes, various kitchen hardware site for a couple of hours yesterday. Smallest c/c was 2-1/2" which would mean filing the slots a bit.

I think you need to search for equipment rack handle in google.
Try this page / look up tool at Digi-Key https://www.digikey.com/products/en/boxes-enclosures-racks/handles/590
I think you will find what you are looking for, to use on your Stingray Robot.
