and what if the 100k post is by a Parallax employee? will it be the next non-employee post?

And what about meaningless posts to the test area in the middle of the night... For $500, I'll pull an all nighter! (and I'm sure my wife would help...)

I'm kidding; I realize that neither of these would not be in the spirit of the "contest".

On the other hand, if I have a question or response, and it gets close, I'd certainly think about what games I could play.

According to the Head Honcho, Parallax employees, their families, relatives and pets are ineligible. The test forum will go off-line when we get closer to avoid the eBay syndrome. [Wait till the last 20 seconds and then find out who has the best round trip times to the server]

I was all ready to have a PINK module send auto emails to the test forum and everything...

Kidding.

Good luck everyone.

Looks like that's already begun...I would guess the head-honcho will also want to avoid this kind of thing as well.

Stupid suggestion if the eBay type thing looks or feels like it might get out of hand:

Have the Head-Honcho pick a somewhat random post a little above (or below) 100k ahead of time, but don't announce what number it is (publicly). I know this takes some of the magic out, and I should probably be taken out back and shot for even bringing all this up, but I couldn't stop my fingers.

Since my pets are not associated with Parallax, can they qualify?

If so, how do I get them quickly trained to make postings?

I find it hard to believe a goldfish might win, or even my dog.

George,

We had to disqualify pets to preclude the possibility that the group of monkeys that are·rewriting War and Peace (albiet randomly) would find this site and start posting. Sorry. :))

Jim;

I think you have the order backwards.· They (the monkeys) wrote a random book, and then they (the other monkeys in the white building with a big dome) decided it would make a good tax code.· As monkey set 1 issues new editions, monkey set 2 converts them to law.

Meanwhile monkey set 3 (lawyers and accountants) get rich, and buy more food for monkey set 1.

Rinse, Repeat.

Let's see.....
The post counter was removed at about 4,500 to go.
I see 411 reply posts in the last three days [is that since then?] Hmmmm.
That comes out to about 10-12 days to go.

Maybe you should reset that counter a couple of times without mention.

Nothing like a good estimate. Or guesstimate. or and asstimate.

Hey guys, are the numbers right or wrong?
I just cannot believe that 'the community PC-board milling machine' accounts for over 10,000 viewings!

I realize this is not positngs [it does have 14 or more pages of those too], but that traffic says something.
Is Parallax discovering a lucrative enterprise or is it all just buzz?

Well, if you add the post count on the home page for all of the fora, then there are nowhere near 100,000 posts...unless you count the old Yahoo stuff...and even then, there seems to be a disparity...

Ryan, any idea why id doesn't seem to add up?

Why not count the number of·archived postings? Including those, as you observe, there·are somewhere near 100,000, and especially so if you were also to add in the postngs on·"Private" forums. All those would add up to over 96,000 now, I suggest. Dunno, of course, if this is how Parallax _is_ doing its counting.

When does a number [especially a large number] truly reflect the real world? For instance, how many people are there in your home town?

It is about a lottery for fun. As long as the method is consistent and reasonable to nearly all, it should be okay. The counter was merely creeping up to six figures and someone noticed that it might be something to celebrate.

Regarding the 'community PC-milling machine.....
I was merely expressing my surprise that one topic could attract so much attention - especially a topic indirectly related. It seems like some kind of record in its own right.

People who are drawn to stamps and SXs and an inate design to build stuff, this goes hand and hand with CNC mills. So it doesn't suprise me there are so many viewing, plus its the longest thread in the forums, I use to follow it until about it got to page 5 or 6, then the discussions became so nuanced I stopped checking in on it.

Maybe we should disqualify anyone that posts to this thread from the prize. Heh.... he..

Long, long ago, I had a landscape gardening company in Oregon with 6 lawnmowers and a three trucks. One was a 1951 Chevy two-ton flat bed. We lived in a house that my partner owned with a bit of lawn.

So, we told all the neighbors to use our mowers and not to buy one.
In turn, they mowed our yard too [1/5 of an acre]. It is quite nice to come home and not have to do the same work at home. The schedules fit and they never had to worry about repair, storage, or gas.

Later, neighbors asked about borrowing the 2-ton to cut firewood [you could load it full in one day and the travel was about 2-3 hours regardless of the truck size [half ton or two ton]. We said 'yes' - just leave it with the same amount of gas and a half cord of wood.

Winters became toasty, the neighbors were generous, life was good even though we never got rich.

The only dilemma with a 'community PC-milling machine' is how to share with a dispersed, global community.
I certainly cannot drop by and do my cooperative share as I am in Taiwan.
Still I certainly understand the appeal. It can work in someplace like Houston or Rocklin.
There has to be convienent access and face-to-face fellowship.

There are about 4284 members in these forums.
In about 10 days some of these members will try to win the competition.
I will now use my great skills in foreseeing things.

*foreseeing, mumbling,, ranting ..*
Yes, I foresee that there will be a lot of postings then.

So why not put all of the “competition postings” in a dedicated forum?

or change the rules.

Parallax is an ethical company, they may decide depending on the situation that "junk" posts don't qualify as a valid post, ie:

Post 1:
I
Post 2:
just
Post 3:
wanted
Post 4:
to
Post 5:
say
Post 6:
hi!

would be an unsubstantive contribution to the forums, I would not be at all suprised if they chose to only reward that member's post nearest the 100k mark which·actually contributes to the knowledge and understanding of forum members.

The Test forum will become "unavailable" soon. The remaining forums require that posts contain substance and be on-topic. The moderators weed out the chaffe every day. Everything that remains are counted posts.

Personally, the last thing I want to see is Parallax awarding the door prize to a post that enumerates every available emoticon.
