    Thanks Nick.

Let's see, only a few bucks more than other kind, more room, more flexibility, better built..... I think these qualify as a no brainer. Guess I'll go buy some.

Just to add my 2c worth, I use the tackle box style of storage, butwith things like resistors I took out all the small dividers which just left three open rows which just happened to be a fraction wider than a resistor, I then just used paper folders to contain each value and filled up each row 'filing drawer' style. It works well, and when I add a new value I just file it in order. Although the tackle box idea really comes unstuck if you drop it...
But on the flip side you have a new game for the all the family - 2000 resisitor pick up, great fun for those long winter nights...

From reading this topic, it got me wondering--- how to make an automated search pick system using a stamp or otherwise, to locate parts in a small area. I don't have that problem right now, but i thought i might add some insight. I thought about leds behind the cabinet to illuminate each individual drawer, but too much wiring and work, so i came up with this idea if anyone might be interested, or even might think it could work. The drawer indentifier would be a small laser pointer mounted on 2 servos, that would give 2 axis of rotation ( pan and tilt ), and that mounted on the ceiling to give a line of sight to the stock area. Now the searchable database could just be a pbasic program run from the editor itself. The database would be set up to numerical values to correspond with the parts inventory with exel? or something along that idea, and the corresponding positioning data for the servos. So, you would enter in the info of the part to find, the pbasic program would run, the value entered would be found, and the positioning data would then be sent out to the pointer. And there you have a red dot on that tray where the part is located. And it only needs to be on for locating, so chances are slim about having to worry about your eyes from the laser. Might be a bit of work to preposition the servos, and to make the database, but would be a fairly cheap way of doing this. Don't know if i have explained this very well, and if i haven't, that is normal for me. Anyway, just an idea, don't actually know if it would work, but it might.

    kelvin,

    Dohhh!!!!

I was fiddling with this idea last night....to find that my laser pointer had died. I settled on a bright white LED and a couple of lenses that seemed
ok for the short distance the "beam" would need to focus.... (a focal distance of 9ft - 10ft to cover a 8ft wide area at 9ft away on the opposite wall)

You could also write the program so it would show "empty" bins.... and a function to search for duplicate parts ....a histogram to show parts that you
never or very seldom use.... you could probably go on and on.

I even toyed with the idea of using LED's behind the part trays, and thought that row and column addressing would be the best approach to
    minimize the wiring

How about a cnc type X,Y arm with a bar code reader on the end. Then it could pull out the drawer and deliver it to you. It could then scan said boxes and store them back in their proper places.
Not sure about inventory control though. An automatic method would be to weigh the drawer before and after to judge how many components were removed...but maybe just a VB window pop up and you just type in a digit saying how many you used!

Then have the program preset to issue warnings when inventory gets low!

    KenM,

Wonder what would happen if there were multiple "blind" submittals that performed the same or similar task?
Blind meaning that nobody knew what was being submitted until the results were published.

Isn't that like having a "cross country race" but not telling anyone what country?!

Hmmm, that in itself gave me an idea......if there is another contest, in addition to individual ideas, maybe another category where the contest defines a task to complete with specific specifications.

Then it is up to the contestant to implement the task. The best implementation·would be the winner (most efficient, clever code etc) ?????

    KenM,

That or maybe a few specific design wins that the contestant could choose from. Now, how to determine what design wins to choose from.... A pre-contest submittal/vote?

Did you guys read that article posted about the mexican immigrants that took on MIT in the underwater adventure?!
They were judged on many things for points....So, having the tasks fulfilled or attempted would gain X points...but then you give different 'mentions' to the other aspects of the unit...design...simplicity...complexity...funny looking doll strapped to the front grill... tongue.gif

Hey everyone, I have a personal favor to ask the group. Those of you who posted your work bench pictures in one of these three threads (I am posting this in all three) may have your pictures on my photo gallery. The problem is I don't know who's photos belong to who. So, if you posted your workbench or workspace here would you please stop over to:

    http://photos.savagecircuits.com/thumbnails.php?album=10

And help me identify who the owner of the photo is and a description for the photo(s). Thanks in advance to everyone who can help.

P.S. - If you want to add your photo just send them to me with descriptions and I will add them.

    Best Regards,

    Chris,

There was also a thread for a Parallax contest for best workbench that had a lot of pictures (I think for the 20 year celebration). I remember because I won an honorable mention for "Best Small Space".

Chris, I will get pictures as soon as I get my stuff back in the house and set back up. (everything was moved to the garage for the holidays). In the meantime, I am working straight out of my two main project boxes which I bought from JoAnn's Fabric and Crafts' store. My wife had a 50% off coupon and I happened to see these case on a trip there with her. Not my first choice for colors, but they work out unbelievably well.

W9GFO, in a similar thread said...
"The other day at Lowes I bought eight Plano boxes that appear identical to the ones that the PE Kit comes in. I say "appear" because I left all eight of them in Port Orchard - doh! Anyway, they were only $4.97 each.

I know that the Plano box that my PE kit came in was made in the USA, didn't actually check the Lowes ones - hope so...
