are you still looking to repair your rc880? because i have an rc880 with no leads and i have no idea if it work but you are welcome to it for postage costs
I have the original software for the RC880 multicolor it runs on XP,Win 7 ran it on both. I also have the pin out of the DB9 com port to telephone jack on the back of the sign. It runs great then I tried a USB to Com port converter and it worked great.
Also have the original manual if anyone needs what I have let me know.

Your post is so current I've got my hopes up that I'll be able to access your manual. A link? Hard copy? Please let me know. I have a working display with remote. Thanks
Got to the password step. Someone has programmed a password so I'm stuck at this step. Any ideas as to access or delete or bypass the existing password?
Setting or Clearing the password is on page 5. You can use the Factory Reset and send button once you have it connected to a serial port COM1 page 35 using the software it is real easy to use. Make a cord with a db9 female to male cord made for pc from Radio Shack. Open the sign up on the connector end and slice into the white and red wires to the phone jack serial port cable db9-3 red to white and db9-5 yellow to red. Follow the pin out on page 35. Do you have a serial port on your machine? If not you can use a serial port emulator that plugs in with USB connected to the db9 cable. http://www.siongboon.com/projects/2006-03-06_serial_communication/DB9%20female.gif

I did not have the remote so the software is what I used to program it and it is real easy to use once you make a patch cord for it.
