    I'd forgotten about this, but at work we've got tachometer/hour meter
    combination units on our small generators that pick up their
    information from a wire wrapped around the plug wire.

    Goto www.northertool.com, and search for item number 160590.
    Unfortunately they're encapsulated and I don't have a manual any
    more, but maybe this'll give you an idea.

    I'm looking for a front end to make a tachometer as well, found this
    document, check out page 10.
