  • OMG, the vision sensing is gross overkill! One of these would've sufficed with no extra microcontroller required:

No doubt that line scanner response blows the vision system out of the water. :+1:

  • Hi

Hey- that line scanner (tsl1401) looks interesting- didn't know they were available.
The bare chips aren't too expensive may have to get a couple to play with. Sadly they are analog output so that complicates things a bit.

You won't be able to, unless you want to buy 51 or more. The bare sensor chips have been out of production for quite some time. Fortunately, there are a thousand or so of the Parallax product in stock or in the queue. :)

Even if you could get the chips, you'd have to come up with a circuit board and provide a lens to focus an image.

Sadly they are analog output so that complicates things a bit.

By adjusting the exposure time and making sure the visual contrast is adequate, the analog output can serve as a digital input, where the digital threshold corresponds to the desired optical threshold.

You could use ultrasound and make it way simpler, too.

The approach the designer took on that project was kind of like putting together parts of a human.

  • Different accuracy requirements but I have one of these on the slow-boat right now.

If it works out, I'll have 6 or 8 of them, talking to a P1.

  • Hi

ams, TSL1401CL Visible Light 128-Element Photodetector, 1000nm, Surface Mount CL package
    RS Stock No.:785-7692
    Mfr. Part No.:TSL1401CL
    Brand:ams
    1 off £7;40 each
    250+ off £4.24

So surface mount still available- dil package discontinued

8 pads total- only 6 used
2 columns of pads, with a space of 0.8 mm between columns. Pads are on 2.5mm centres
How hard can it be? :*

    Visible Light 128-Element Photodetector, 1000nm,

Either visible or 1000 nm :) Maybe there are animals that can see 1000 nm, but a human can not, this is infrared.

  • Like all the TSL1401 variants, the TSL1401CL has been discontinued by AMS. Here is its spectral response, extending from violet to near infrared, peaking around red:

The lens on the Parallax product, which uses the "CL" version, includes an IR-cut filter so it responds only to visible light.

When it comes to the detection of the ball, wouldn't that be a nice application for the Goertzel sensor?
