But now I don't understand. As far as I'm know scc21.net is not the same as www.scc21.net or xyz.scc21.net or whatever. Why should they not all resolve to different IP addresses or none at all?
I didn't say they had to resolve to the same machine, just that the domain didn't resolve, period. The fact that a subdomain resolves when the domain doesn't points up to someone not knowing what they're doing, unless you want to defend mediocrity or ignorance. As to *why* you'd want example.com and www.example.com to at least resolve, even if not to the same place, just re-read Erco's message. Something is happening in his routing where he's not getting to www.scc21.net, but scc21.net. It won't resolve, so zip, nada, bupkis.
I'm not sure I worded that clearly. I'm quite happy with a domain name and all it's subdomains resolving to different IP addresses.
It's not clear to me that it essential for flybynight.com to resolve when the web site is on www.flybynight.com. It's a convenience not to have to type the "www." of course.
Am I remembering wrongly? I seem to recall there was a time when the "www." was needed to get you to many web sites back in the day.
I'm confused about your statement regarding routing. It's my understanding that routing is nothing to do with domain names, does not know or need them.
Erco's original post has a link to "www.scc21.net". That should work for him as it does here.
"scc21.net" Fails to resolve here.
"www.scc21.net" works fine.
But then, Chrome learns, typing "scc21.net" gets me to "www.scc21.net". Until the browser cache is cleared.
Now might be a good time to check your computer for spyware but you should also see if any toolbars have been added or any additional Search Providers.
MalwareBytes and SpyBot - Search and Destroy are good programs to have on your computer.
Thanks all, this has turned into a larger and more interesting mystery than I expected. Genetix, I do use Malwarebytes & SuperAntiSpyware regularly, I'll have to check out Spybot. I had Avast free on one laptop for a while, but uninstalled it. It was massive and took forever to install. Lord knows what residue it left even after uninstalling.

Which implies there's a second problem that's combining here.
