Changing Username

I've disliked my username since shortly after I created it. I made it years ago... times change, people grow up.

Is there any way the we could be given access to change our usernames?

This thread explains two ways:
http://vanillaforums.org/discussion/13386/vanilla-2-how-can-users-change-their-own-usernames

1) Admins can always change usernames
2) Edit a config option:
$Configuration['Garden']['Profile']['EditUsernames'] = TRUE;

    David,

That should probably directed to webmaster@parallax.com. As a moderator, I can not change it.

  • Thanks, email sent.

In the early days, Parallax Forums used to allow users to change their names. I used to be Kramer, but got a brainwave to use Loopy Byteloose instead. At times, I have a desire to change to something less flamboyant. The name annoys some people.

As near as I can tell, Parallax put a stop to changing user names many years ago. One could open a new account via a different email address, but that might be seen as another no-no -- logging in under two identities.

So I go on with Loopy Byteloose.
  • I want spud :) If it's a big deal, then I don't, but it's time for a little change up, with a nod to heritage.

I think it was the forum software that prevented changing names in the end.
One could open another account under the same email, but posts would not transferred, and yes, it it frowned upon.

    Hey Spud,

When I called you that I was afraid you would take offence. Great idea.

Sometimes I think "Heater." needs an upgrade. But to what?....
  • Okay... get rid of Heater.

    How about Maurice?
  • Heater.Heater. Posts: 21,230
    Maurice?

Does that have some cultural significance and/or connection to my character that I'm not aware of?

Increasingly I have been thinking I should be called "Brian".

That's too confusing. I think we should all change our names to Bruce to keep things straight.

    I think that dot need a place "Heater6.3" :)

Well, Bruce, do you mind if we call you Bruce to avoid confusion? I think "Heater6.3" is a great idea. Like Bruce said.

  • Woh.... has your username always had the period??????????? I never noticed it til now...
  • Being stuck with the same user name for over 10 years does get kind of old. More so when it's something you picked in a hurry because what you really wanted was used (but idle).
  • Heater.Heater. Posts: 21,230
No. My first user name was "heater" all lower case with no period.

Some how it did not work after the previous forum upgrade. Something to do with me no longer having the same email address to re-confirm my registration. I had left the company with the old email address so that was screwed.

The period was an accident though.

As in "Bud the Spud" of Stomping Tom fame?
  • Heather? :)
  • I dunno Heater I think your new avatar makes the username perfect.

    localroger,

Good point. I love the avatar. Thank you Sapphire. I don't have to think about a name change any more.

Heater T-shirts will be available shortly :)

Seems pointless to change my name as I keep getting inspired to take up another odd one.

Yes, Brian seems comprehensible for Heater.
And now it seems that both Swimdude and Potatohead desire Spud.

I could try Sponge Bob, but it just would lead to more new names. Wireworm, Zenda Paychek, Private Affairs, and so on.
  • No, I didn't know about Bud the Spud. He's kind of a kick Smile and funny act though!

I did mean some continuity, and I've had a friend or two here drop spud and 'taterhead out there, both of which I liked.

When people give you a nickname, it's generally a good thing. :)

So, what's the news? Can we change 'em or not?

Well, I'm glad I decided years ago to simply use my own name as my nick on every forum.. works fine, except for those few forums where there is a (too high) minimum limit on characters, and a very few cases where somebody else took my name already.

One of the best forum nicks I have seen in a long while is "onglema". Which is Finnish for "The problem". Sums up the situation nicely.

Way back in ancient computer times when I got my first internet user account, I was trying to build a business in tax accounting.

So I chose taxman@whatever my ISPN was.

I quickly discovered chatrooms in those days. And just as quick discovered that when 'taxman' arrived, everyone else would leave.

Some names are a disaster on the internet. Just try visiting www.penisland.net which is all about quality pens. Someone in Asia thought 'Pen Island' was just a wonderful business identity. Seems they never considered the bigger picture.
  • And now it seems that both Swimdude and Potatohead desire Spud.

As much as I like mashed potatoes, I have no desire for Spud.

    No word back yet :(

    Loopy,

I think there is more to penisland.net than pens. As nice as the pens may be I would guess they make a ton of money from advertising on that site. It must get a lot of traffic!

Anyway, it is hysterical: "You pen is our business", "Handling The Big Jobs, Too". And check out the testimonials.

  • Carefull. Remember the PG rating on this forum. :)
  • Talk about a genuine ambiguity!

What an epic fail! I just shared that with a couple branding people I know. Can't wait for their comments.

Nothing but awesome. Thanks for the laughs this morning.

    Publison,

No idea what you are talking about :)

    It's OK. I am a PG.
  • As for changing user names, I'm still wait to hear from the forum Gods. Whoops, that religious. Gurus.
