2015 holiday part exchange

All -

Yes, it's that time again. Last year we didn't get this going early enough.

Almost everyone (with the exception of erco :)) has a few (if not hundreds) of extra parts needing a new home.

I, for one, have bought 100 of a part just to get a handful for a project. I've done this more times than I'd like to admit.

If anyone is interested, I can post a list of my excess parts. Mostly capacitors, resistors, LED's, servo cables, DuPont cables and connector parts, but I also have some LCD displays, sensors, and PC boards that I might let go.

Also, an alternative to trading parts might be to donate parts to an electronics club or the like. Maybe as a group?

Suggestions are welcome!

Walter

Excellent call, Walter! I had hoped that Parallax would have another event this year, where even I could donate to freebie table, but that didn't happen. Great idea to pay it forward proactively and spread the joy (parts) around.

BTW, what ever happened to the traveling parts box? Is the Tab Sumobot board which Andy added still in there? That and a Toddler are all I need to complete my collection.

And this thermos. And this chair. Wait, I need this. And that's ALL I need!
  • You might also do a shoutout to Xanadu here. He's started a DIY robot and drone builders makerspace, with semi-regular meetups of folks in the San Diego area.
  • Hmmm, maybe it's time to offload that reel of SMT 3 watt RGB LEDs............. Taking note of this thread as I do need another round of bench cleanup.
  • Yes! Let's get it started. I used to run it for a couple of years, woh, 5 years ago! :

Of course just paying for postage gets pricey for domestic shipping these days. Maybe I'll "Secret Santa" someone by just ordering a pile of fun stuff from China with free ship direct to their house. :)

The medium flat rate priority mail box from the USPS is not too expensive at $12.65. And would probably be a good size to ship around.

I'm in, I have LOTS of parts laying around that I don't have immediate need for...

...there's that "need" word I keep hearing...must research that someday!

    I probably have some stuff.

Publison, you had something going on with a Community College or tech school near you, if I recall. That still going on?
  • Thanks for the mention. wmosscrop PM'd me. All donations are welcome and you will get something in return.

Also if a box is being sent around I'd gladly contribute. I'd kick it off but I'm not really sure how it works. I'll check the other thread mentioned.

  • In the past, it's just been member to member, not travel box like Chris Savage used to do.

Basically list item(s) that you have available, ( I usually have 6-10), and as people claim them, they are sent directly to those people. No waiting for weeks for a box to go around. Also this works better for international people. The traveling box did not work for them. Normally you can attach a small shipping fee to the item(s), but if you are feeling festive, no need to charge.

I had donated a QuadRover to a Tech school, but it was missing a few hydraulic parts that they could not source, so they gave it back to me last year. It was also missing the original Propeller control board, so I gave them a Project Board to get them started. Well, no one had time to learn SPIN, and it's a 4 hour round trip for me, so that didn't work either.
  • OK, the ball is rolling...

My box will be on its way to xanadu (the forum member, that is!)

In a way, this is my thanks to all of the forum members that have helped me over the years. Your help, advice, and wisdom have been invaluable.
