Cat-astrophe

Ut oh, this one isn't leaving. Second stray in a month, first one was from a block away. This one has signs posted, cell phone apps downloaded, pictures uploaded and nothing for weeks, no "microchip" (RFID) either.

Besides the fact that cats are migrating to my office, and some moron managed to lose a gigantic cat, I have a real dilemma. What should I name this beast? Given it's extreme weight I'm assuming it was mistreated and I'm ready to take ownership. I would relinquish said ownership upon the original owners recovery, but for now kitteh needs a name!

I almost had to get out my Proppano to take a picture of it.

    Tiny?

    COG?

Don't feel bad, I let one climb in my car so he wouldn't get run over. He didn't get out until he got "home".

You never pick a cat, it always picks you!

Haha TINY! That's on the list now thanks.

I was thinking about names like COG. It's beating up the dog now... I should probably save the dog.

A cat like that I'd name Sumo.

Alexander the Great because he's set out to conquer the world, or at least your home... Maybe shorten it to Alex or Al...

Of course, a name relating to the cat's ... um ... gravitas may not always be appropriate, given the responsible cat person's onus to help the ponderous feline achieve and maintain a healthier weight. That may, however, be well-nigh impossible, as the overburdened critter might well leave in pursuit of a more indulgent host.

At the current rate that stray cats are arriving, I suggest you name the first one "Cog0", the second "Cog1", and so on.

If you actually do adopt a "Cog7", consider seeking a outside support group of some sort.

It is very hot here in Kaohsiung. I washed the dog today and he is enjoying be cooler and squeaky clean.

"Short Stack" might be a cute name for such a long cat.

It's more like "Stack Overflow" based on our professional and hobby choices! :D

Remember, you can always try and name and change it, the cats really don't mind. We've renamed a couple after a week or so once we got to know them better.

Since you are a pilot, you might just want to pick a name and then attach the "heavy" suffix to his call sign.

So true! A big black long-hair cat just joined the staff here. We originally named him Von Schwartz. But the name simply didn't fit his personality. Perhaps we'll go with Soot.

We once adopted a rather rotund neutered male, and named him Orson -- after Orson Wells. He was all gray, but looked a lot like this kitteh.

Phil is right that if you try to put this critter on a strict diet to slim him down, and he's ever let outside, he'll likely to just stray again in search of more plentiful vittles. That's what happened to Orson. One day, after finishing his portioned lunch at our place, he swung by the neighbor's, where he regularly snacked from their cats' dish. He then dined somewhere else, I can only suppose, as he was never seen again. We had him in total for about a month.

We now have indoor-only cats, but our experience with strays and having a cat door is that many of them develop a "Gentle On My Mind" attitude about life. They're their own felines.

As it turns out kitteh has some health issues, so it will have to remain inside until they are resolved, the list is long. A pet insurance loop-hole will need to be exploited. No problem, I'll bring the outside inside. For now its food is scattered about the house. There is an abundance of food, but it has to find it. Oddly (or regularly in cat) it hasn't been hungry much. This may not help its behavior if I were to let it out. The thing is it doesn't want to go outside, it doesn't meow, it used the litter box, and it can gut you like a fish with its insane claws that remind me of shark teeth. On the downside I have to childproof all cabinets, it opens cabinets with a simple swipe of its paw. Found that out at 4am today when it brought me some trash and fleas. The trash was from under the sink, the fleas were probably NSA implants.

You guys/gals are the best, I laughed quite a bit reading the responses. We may have all been superseded by a young girl who is 100% positive the cat's name is "Lover Boy" because it has a heart shaped patch of fur on the back of its neck.

So for now, it's name is Lover Boy [Heavy], but shhhhh I'm calling it COG (aka Cat Of Girth) 2nd.

    Thanks!

I would imagine Kitteh has or may become diabetic. Orson was borderline, and we needed all kinds of special food for him.

My mom had a big gray tom -- she called him Smoky (she usually went with the obvious names!) -- that wandered into our backyard one afternoon. He was fine for a couple years, then one day I noticed he was very lethargic. Took him to the vets, where he was diagnosed as diabetic, and he was put on a special diet. Thing is, Smoky was a terrific ratter. When he was brought inside, he didn't get the rats any more. Where I grew up, if the cats didn't control the rats, the rattle snakes did. I still remember the story about finding a baby rattler in the pots and pans cabinet...

I'd rather have a cat that a poisonous snake running loose!

I have some ideas for cat toys. The pet product market is a bit lackluster for Lima Bravo Heavy. I feel a project coming on.

Aha.. now I see... That`s how "a Long" looks like. Standing on 4 bytes... Shift in 32 bits of food each meal... shi(f)t out as 2 words...
    DigiCat??
Looks like it`s been a mismatch btween shiftin and shift out over the last months... Maybe "Fat Domino" would be a good name?

I like Phil's choice of Sumo.

Some of the best cats I had just showed up. One followed my brother home and another showed up at a friend's house.

People think cats are aloof and uncaring but they are actually sociable and very perceptive.

In 1987, my employer pulled a classic "Office Space" maneuver, bringing in experts McKinsey to chop 25% of "unnecessary headcount" through a procedure they called "Activity Value Analysis" or AVA. Heads were on the chopping block (as they are again now)!

As God is my witness, in the employee classified ads at the same time, someone was trying to place a 3-legged but otherwise healthy cat named "Bunky". In a rather inspired move, one of our graphics artists made a wonderful logo showing Bunky as the official mascot of AVA. "Twenty-five percent reduction and STILL STANDING!"

That's a great story, erco! Here in P.T. we are blessed with the presence of a three-legged dog. Although a local small grocery has deemed dogs off-limits inside, the tripodal canine never seems unwelcome and is frequently seen roaming the aisles with his master while he shops, without objection from the management.
