Fellow Forumistas,

The pending Forums Upgrade is not getting enough attention (probably because it's been relegated to the Announcements forum where nbobdy can respond to it to keep the thread alive). Nonetheless, this looks to be a major "home-invasion" remodel. :) So get your butts over there and try it out before it's too late to make suggestions.

Thanks,
-Phil

I hope this one preserves the links. (Maybe I should read the other thread to find out.)

I'm just barely getting over the trauma from the last upgrade.

Can't reply, the thread is blocked to goofballs like me.

erco, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
1.Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
2.If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

I looked a few days ago and didn't see any content other than one thread.

    I'll look again.

If Parallax really wants good feedback then I would prefer to see a mock migration keeping this forum active and the new one read only so we can see how it will all look and see if the links are preserved. If it doesn't work blow it away and try again. As long as the current forum is the active one and the Master copy until the final migration is done.

I didn't leave a comment there as it requires registration. But if that is the new forum it has only a sandbox forum. I could not navigate to anything on this forum.

Generally speaking, it's more mobile friendly. The overall look will take some getting used to though. I'll comment a bit later this weekend.

Frankly, I would stick with this one before moving, but I did read "so much more..." can happen with the new software, so let's get to the "so much more" part and we will just have to get over an interface change.

I hate forum interface changes frankly. Once it's working for me, it works. But, I do understand the need to get at better features.

I suspect security and spam control are factors as well. V-bulletin has become a bloated beast that is difficult to maintain and keep secure, IMO.

It's a good thing I didn't call dibs XSS or DDoS...

I went to the new forum and couldn't find any info on it. I wasn't here for the last one. Is the forum upgrade in person in Rocklin? Do we need to bring relays, breadboards or anything?

Thanks for the pointer Phil. I wasn't aware as I only frequent a few of our forums here.

    Hopefully it will...
    1. Have a better search engine *****major item*****
    2. Keep all old links intact *****major item*****
    3. Better editing - some features break on Windows 8.1 (missing cursor on firefox, unable to use IE11 at all)
    4. There are other minor gripes, but the above are my main 3.

According to the page source, the new forum is V-Bulletin v5.1.1.

That would explain the identical formatting tags and, hopefully, the chances of a seamless transfer.

If it doesn't support 65K dialup connections, it isn't an upgrade.

    Guys,

It's great to keep this thread alive by making general comments. But just as a reminder:

Nothing is stopping you from talking about it on our active discussion forums though, if you want you could talk about it in general; however posts about the preview on the preview forums will be easier to find for my purposes.

Can't really test the preview forum. It insists on entering a date of birth before letting one sign up. That is no bodies business.

Why the change anyway? Why does it have to look so awful? Can it be tweaked to look like the existing style/theme? Why does it not expand to fit my screen any more?

I'm sure I'll have more to complain about later :)

I would like answers to those questions too. Well, maybe not the second one.

Just like the current version, you can hide your age and date of birth in the User Settings.

    Dibs on testing profanity filter.

I hope they upgrade to wrong swears :) (i.e. replace any swear words with a random noun/verb/short-phrase in bold letters) Can be super amusing.

The profanity filter never bothered me. It does not recognize swearing in English:)
