Update 5/18/14 get your ticket now, we're a go for August 8th and 9th!!!! :)

Hey Everyone! In the tradition of the legend that is OBC, who’s up for an Expo this summer in Boston? Nothing too fancy, just space, food, and the opportunity to hang out together and share your projects.

Let me know if you’re interested and what weekends you think would be the best for the Boston area (we just moved here 2 months ago). I'll then make a poll for you to vote on a date. :)

    I'm interested in a UPE Boston. I don't have a date preference.

I'll come! I'll help you organize it too, if you need help. I live in NH about 1.5 hrs. north of Boston.

Maybe "NE" should stand for "New England" in this case. I think "NE" was hijacked for the Ohio expo (which is actually the west):

I would be interested. As for time suggestions, I'd avoid holiday weekends like Memorial day, the Fourth, or Labor day. People tend to schedule social events on those days which might limit attendance.

Awesome, everyone. Lev, I will definitely be asking for your help and everyone else too. :)

No holiday weekends, good idea. Any other times that we can strike off? Maker fair weekends, Comic Cons,....

I'm' definitely up for it. 2-1/2 hour drive is better than 8 hour to Ohio. And I can be home the same day.:)

Problem is I am responsible for the hardware and software for timing for the Fairfield County Sports Car Club. We have an autocross once, maybe twice a month during the summer.

    The dates I am married to so far are 3/29, 3/30, 4/13, 5/11, 5/26, 6/01, 6/21, 6/22, 7/20, 8/03, 8/16,8/17, 9/14, 9/28, 10/12, 11/02.

That's not to say I can't train a backup for one of those dates.

I'm interested. I live in NH so Boston is an easy drive.

I'm in! 90 minute drive to Boston. Regular at the MIT Flea Market in Cambridge... Unless some contract comes up that renders me a shut-in until the design & build is complete, I'll be there!!!

This is great! I'm going to be traveling all of this next week so I probably won't be on the forums until I get back.

@Publison we should be able to pick a weekend that works for you (BTW, what is doogiedoc?)

Does anyone else have "no-go" weekends? Right now, I'm thinking that we might shoot for sometime in July/August. Something to look forward to and give us time to get the word out. :)

@everyone who knows the Boston area, any ideas of fun meeting locations? Anyone with connections to the Microsoft NERD building? I've heard that they let groups use it.

Also, we want to make sure that we avoid any Maker fair, hacker fest, Comic Con weekends. I'll do some Googling, but I'm hoping that anyone familiar with the NE will let this new transplant know. :)

It's actually who is doggiedoc, ( I spelled it wrong). He's a forum member out of South Carolina. Might be a "fur piece" for him to travel.

Might be fun to do in conjunction with the Flea Market at MIT on April 20, 2014. That may be too soon.

I was just coming on to post about the MIT Flea as well - it's the third Sunday of every month from April through October. It seems like it would be a natural combination. The flea market runs from 8 or 9am until I believe 2pm. It's always got something useful to offer. I will probably be setting up a table or three to get rid of a lot of my decades of collected good junk! :)

Not really sure about available meeting spaces in the area - but I know there are some good restaurants within walking distance of the flea market :)

That would be cool to have the meeting on Saturday, then everyone can go to the flea market on Sunday.
Maybe an early dinner / late lunch on Sunday to talk about our flea market finds before we all head home.

I would give it strong consideration! I think it's about a 13 hour drive to Boston from here, or a "Fur piece" you could say. ;)

Ok, so I've been poking around and I'm currently looking at two options for the location of the expo:

    1) at the clubhouse of my apartment complex. holds ~20 people, very nice, $25 per hour.
    2) Possibly the "Artisan Asylum" This would be my first choice, but I don't know if this would be an option yet. I'm planning on going over there and talking to them tomorrow. We could get some walking traffic here and it's a pretty amazing place (read below)

Let me know what you think :)

    http://artisansasylum.com/

Artisan’s Asylum, Inc. is a non-profit community craft studio located at 10 Tyler Street, in Somerville, Massachusetts. Our mission is to support and promote the teaching, learning and practicing of craft of all varieties. To support that mission, we offer the following:

A fully equipped and professionally maintained manufacturing facility, which includes capabilities for precision metal machining, electrical fabrication, welding, woodworking, sewing & fiber arts, robotics, bicycle building and repair, lampworking, jewelry, computer-aided design, and screenprinting
A large range of affordable, publicly-accessible classes in these areas and more offered by local artisans, either focusing on creating a final product the student can take home after the class or general training for specific tools
Monthly and daily membership plans for the general public to access our facility on weekends and after working hours, encouraging DIY culture and community craftsmanship
Affordable space and equipment rental to local professional artists and businesspeople interested in having access to industrial-grade manufacturing equipment and a dedicated manufacturing environment without having to invest in capital equipment and long-term space leases
On-site material storage and resale and on-site project storage, allowing community members to create and store projects without the hassle of handling material and storage logistics
Hosting and promotion of local craft-related events

We occupy a 40,000 square foot warehouse in the old Ames Safety Envelope facility at 10 Tyler Street, Somerville, MA. We currently host around 250 monthly members, and have 140 studios, 45 pallet storage units, and over 80 shelf storage units available for rent. Our space has the following amenities:

The Artisans Asylum sounds appealing. It seems like their mission and our interests are a match, and we might even be able to win over some Propeller noobs. The work space might be suitable for some hands on activities.

Any news on cost or availability?

Hey everyone, I talked with the one of the persons at the Artisan's Asylum and it sounds very promising about hosting our get-together there. I'm going to be talking with them some more over the next few days and I'll report back. Very exciting! :)

I want an Artisan's Asylum near me (guess I need to start buying Lottery tickets so I can make this happen). What a great resource to have and a wonderful place to have the first UPENEB!

Awesome! I think it will diffidently be a go with support from so many different people.

Currently, I have Lev and Publison down as being able to help out (depending on the data of course). Everyone, feel free to jump in to. :)

I like Bean's idea of a dinner Friday night, expo Saturday, and possibly a late lunch Sunday for anyone who went to the swap meet and want to brag about what they found. I know that the Asylum has an open house most Friday nights so we might even be able to hang out there that night. I'll know more in about a week or so after I talk with the folks at the Asylum.

With OBC's (Jeff's) blessing, I would like to call this the "Unofficial Propeller Expo, Boston" That way we don't forget where we're at and UPENEB might be confused with Nebraska. :)

I'm meeting with some of the folks at the Asylum next week late Tuesday night. I think they're interested in hosting it and we'll want to make sure that it fits with their calendar. Right now I'm shooting for July/August. I'll post an update around next week Thursday-Friday. :)
