Problem with Forum Editor? (When using Google Chrome)

skylightskylight Posts: 1,915

There seems to be a problem with the editor(s) both simple and advanced, when trying to edit a post the editor window comes up blank, so at the moment there is no way to edit a previous post.

Anyone else having problems?

Have also posted in the test forum, sorry for cross posting but had to test what was wrong first, unfortunately because of the problem am unable to delete those posts.

Edited using Firefox: Changed title to be more specific about editor issue with Chrome.

Not working for me in Chrome.
    1) The "Reply To Post" button hangs forever. I have to right click and select "open in new tab" to get to to the editor.
    2) There are no "code", "quote" etc buttons above the edit window.
    3) When I submit the resulting post on the forum has all the line feeds stripped out and often any capitalization removed.

It's all really annoying and almost useless.

Strangely on another box with the same Debian and Chrome everything works. Only that is a 32 bit install not 64.

Here I am desperately trying to post in Chrome.

Did you notice the two br tags I had to put in the to get new lines?

I have no buttons over my edit box.

I get this error in the JS console when I hit "Post Reply":
Uncaught TypeError: Cannot call method 'getElementsByTagName' of null vbulletin_quick_reply.js?v=417:11qr_replytothread_handle_activate vbulletin_quick_reply.js?v=417:11YAHOO.util.Connect.handleTransactionResponse connection-min.js?v=417:7(anonymous function) connection-min.js?v=417:7

No wonder it does not load.

Thank you for kicking me along with that SRLM.

Works for me on Firefox with one minor annoyance: when I click Reply to Thread, the edit box comes up with a cursor, but when I start typing, the screen goes wacky and no characters appear until I actually click inside the edit box.

I already have the latest version "Version 31.0.1650.57 m"

This means the only way at the moment to edit my posts is to submit a new reply. not ideal, any other thoughts?

    Do you have JavaScript enabled?

    skylight,

OK, this is nuts. I have the same Chrome as you (On Debian) and everything works fine.

I assume you have not disabled JS.

Can you get into the Tools->Javascript Console?

I used to have errors there with an only slightly older Chrome.

Seems to me this is some kind of timing problem, scripts being called before they have loaded for example.

I checked in chrome's settings under advanced but couldn't find any setting for enabling Javascript within Chrome, so I checked under Control Panel and found the Java icon, double clicking this brought up the Java Dialog and under the security tab it shows Enable java content in browsers which is checked
though the slider setting shows High which is the minimum setting recommended.

    No, no !

JavaScript is not Java. They are two totally different things, despite the confusing naming.

Never, never enable Java unless your bank or some other idiot needs it.

yes I can open the javascript console, not sure if related to the forum problem but under Console Tab and clicking on errors the following error is shown:

"{RED X} Failed to load resource"

Got me worried now, should I uncheck the setting then?

OK, Now we are going to need a WEB guru.

Clearly if this script or that resource is not loaded in time then the page cannot be displayed correctly or it's JS code run.

I have seen this kind of "load order dependency" in my own WEB creations.

No idea what is happening here though:)

Sorry for all these extra posts at the moment, The setting under control panel says "enable java content in browser" do I need to uncheck this for safety?

Thanks for your help Heater, at the moment I can still post ok as is evident it's just that I cannot edit or add to my posts without adding an extra post by submitting a new reply, as long as this is not a problem for the moderators I can get by for the time being whilst finding a solution.

Maybe I was a bit extreme about the Java thing.

If you ever visit a web site that needs Java for sure you will see something that insists that you need a Java plugin.

If they are like the banking web sites in Scandinavia they will the be nagging you to install the latest version every week for some security reason or other.

Java is a totally different language and run time system, that most people get as a plug-in from Oracle.

JavaScript is built into every mainstream browser.

Although a bit extreme I'm going to attempt to uninstall Chrome and then reinstall it, befor I do this I will need to download Firefox or another browser first

EDIT: Works fine in firefox so looks like an issue with chrome

So I have a workaround using firefox but prefer to use chrome as it works better with my password manager.

Using another PC and Chrome I was able to edit previous posts in the test forum, It looks like the problem is with the laptop I use which only affects chrome but works fine with firefox.

When I was having Chrome issues I had exactly the same version of Debian (Wheezy) and Chrome (30.something) on two different machines. One worked properly one did not. The difference was the working one was a 32 bit Debian, the broken one was 64 bit.

Now with v31.somthing they both work.
