How did MS products ever get into something as important as a space station?
The concept for the ISS was started in 1993, and the first component of the ISS was put up in 1998. Windows 95 had come out 3 years earlier, and there were many more useful apps for it than for the Mac or Linux. Linux was first release in 1991, just a couple of years before the ISS development started. At that time, Microsoft DOS and Windows 3.1 were probably thought to be better choices than Linux. Of course, things have changed a bit during the past two decades.
Exactly. The ISS concept is from 1993. No Windows in that picture. There were a host of other choices. Many of them even made for important mission critical work.
