Real copter, fake gun + lots of squibs and pyros to impress the gullible.
Looking at the so-called gun, he took some plastic replica and cut off the last foot of it and mounted it. No receiver, ammo belt, clip or drum. It's clear the author of the video thinks his viewers are total couch spuds who get their idea of weapons from playing video games.
He does seem to be real to a extent his company sells a very over priced pimped DIY mod kit for M-14's. Looks cheap and flimsy though. He won't do a drop test onto concrete, sand or mud on video. Quite dishonest.
W9GFO's link to rcgroups pretty much demolishes the video.
Still it's impressive what someone can do with a home pc and special effects s/w. It's about on par with the shoddy sci-fi shows that come on one of the cable channels.
Watch the video at 1:45 and pay attention to the tilting of the rotors and the wallowing. It is a good approximation of something flying but it is clearly (to me) something animated by someone that only had an idea of how things fly.
Oh, before someone says that it is okay that the props all turn the same direction because it is actually controlled by tilting the rotors rather than by the standard way of varying the torque of the motors.
1. The tilting is waaay too slow to be useful for making attitude corrections.
2. There is no mechanism for affecting the tilting
This forum is pretty civil. Except that Xanadu guy!
A lot of people could build a real version of this, so the video is easy to believe. When I first watched it I believed, not because of the CGI just because I know it is possible to do something like this. Once you see how careless Dmitri is with it, the creationists must accept a reminder why they do not build systems like this in real life.
A chilling thought would be to see one fitted with a laser sighted 9mm pistol paused outside your high-rise window. In a CGI urban warfare game characters would shoot at it from various floors. In reality I think they themselves would be targets. I'm sure some company is trying to put together a video game.
I don't think it could ever be a serious threat because it makes noise and it's too easy to spot it. On the other hand it is Orwellian
Really? Want to test that theory? I think somebody skilled with one of these could pop you pretty quickly even if you did know where it was. Who is to say it doesn't have auto aim as well?
The problem is, is that real world physics interferes with fantasy gun play and geeky wonders. Yes you can mount a MG on a helicopter but it's gonna be big and loud with a lot of prop wash. Oh yeah then there is the recoil from the gun which is brutal. You only get the initial burst and that's it. Now it might work if you are intent on killing some lumpen prole watching the telly but not on bad guys who are keyed up and ready to move when they hear sounds that shouldn't be there.
And if it's remote controlled, the signals can either be hacked or jammed quite easily turning the death drone into a expensive tinker toy. It's visual sensor can be blinded as well with COTS equipment.
Ok I understand why it would.be tough to use in real life. But your not prepared your sitting in front of your computer replying to my post....and all of the sudden this thing shoots out the window and flies in.....you won't have time to turn on any jammer or even think.....your going to run. This would be highly dangerous no matter if its a hacked together toy or military grade. It only takes one bullet to kill you how many will you let get fired at you before you run...I would be willing to bet no more than 3.
The best defense is to keep a ball of yarn with you at all times to toss at the offending quadrotor. At Parallax Expo, Rich (a very experienced R/C flier) had his Quadrotor downed when he cut the balloon string and it wrapped around a motor shaft.
Better yet, have loose strands of monofilament or fishing leader hanging down from your ceiling at regular intervals. An impenetrable minefield for any quadrotor ne'er do well.
Wow! Talk about unnerving!! Can you imagine sitting there in Facebook playing FarmVille when your home defense systems tweets a change in your DEFCON level and your Facebook status changes to "under attack"??

I would soil myself, plain and simple. I'm a pretty harmless guy and anyone who actually wanted to take me out could do it fairly easily. You could put a small four-wheeled robot into a low power state until I walked by...
Strangly enough there weren't many flying bots in Robocalypse.......theres something they aren't telling us.......Erco!!!! we needs counter quads made of Balsa wood! Sorry...plywood is too heavy to flyz

All the propellers turn the same direction.
And look at the motors tilt!

3. Very impractical method of control.
We have to be civil, there's a fair chance we may meet face to face.

It is not so much that it is real, it is plausible - just a step away from becoming real.
I guess it will lead to the same issues that Bruce Simpson had with his "Do It Yourself Cruise Missile Project" http://www.interestingprojects.com/cruisemissile/
I'm sure some "company" has put together the prototype of the real deal.

Oh, just drink the Kool-aid and wear your government-issued RFID necklace. Everything is as it should be!

Nonsense! http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?141072-Get-Your-5-Quadrotor-Frame-On
The extra weight helps with the recoil...
