I'm confused. Eight people have checked "I don't use any social network sites." Given that this forum is one of the choices, how were they able to access the poll? Or are there some amongst us who use the forum only for anti-social networking? :)

I am one of the eight. I don't consider a forum to be a "social networking site". My main reason for being here is to gain information or share information. It is a bonus that entertainment and some networking occurs.

A forum loosely fits the definition of social networking but I associate blogs and networking as social contacts. Are you the person that I can call on to share my work with? If not, we aren't assembled together as closely as you might think.

An example would be getting a present that I have to assemble. If I were to throw all the parts out on the living room floor and assemble them together with a rake, that isn't my idea of assembled. Assembled is where we are put together and jointly fitted. Blogging and friending is where people are put together and jointly fitted and message boards can have that but it doesn't mean that everyone in the forum is my friend and sometimes people we add aren't always great fits but sometimes it works. Assembly is where real life networking takes place. The possibility exists in message boards and it works for some but there isn't a replacement for real life interaction.

Thank you so much for all the votes (70? Wow! Thanks!) and for all this feedback.

To be honest, being just 19, I'm tiring of Facebook very quickly and have deactivated it twice in an effort to not use it anymore. The problem is: some of my other online accounts only work if I'm on Facebook! When I deactivate it, several other online accounts get messed up...

    Hello!
Interesting. I chose Twitter, and of course I've got an account here, and also one with LinkedIn. I only chose to associate myself with that one because a lot of people I know have it. Also of course one called Google+, and something called Plaxo. That was an interesting animal.

I view FB as a dangerous entity that we probably don't need, and view its existence the same way I view certain forms of music, as a disruptive presence.

Same here. I'm also one of the eight (I haven't checked if that number has changed lately). I've never considered forums 'social networking sites'. To me forums are totally different to FFB and the like. Forums are specific in their focus, be it a particular product or instrument (Propeller, Ukulele..) or, say, a forum about a particular author or book series. Social networking sites don't have this pre-defined focus. And finally, I'm not here to socialize, I'm here to learn about the Propeller and its use.

The poll is a bit tricky. I DO NOT use any social networks, even on Parallax Forums.

You should have had a clarification about what Parallax Forums really means to get good data. I am totally fed up with emails from beyond the blue claiming that somebody wants to be my friend when I can only imagine the kind of problems I might encounter with identity theft from living abroad.

Righto, if it was, I wouldn't be here.

The social network I use most is LiveJournal...

Then there's a couple of weird stuff forums(Planetfurry.com is the most used, which might be obvious from my Avatar)

I follow a couple of blogs on other systems, and that's it.
The Parallax forums I don't consider 'social' even if there's a bit of banter and teasing now and then.

FaceBook has stopped forwarding friend-requests since I used that link in one of those emails.
(Nice of them to not requiring you to be a member for that. Bad of them to send them at all... )
LinkedIn, sometimes sends me such requests, I think... Haven't checked the trashcan lately.
(They require you to log in to stop such messages. Not very professional of a 'network for professionals')
    Skype is nonexistent.
    Same with MSN.
I sometimes check twitter ( twitter.com/eComStation ) and again, that's not that social, either...

I'm a nerd... Social is something we read about in dictionaries...

I stick with forums (here and elsewhere).

I do not and do not intend to have a Facebook account. It really bothers me when companies put information on their Facebook pages that is not available elsewhere. One company in particular (not Parallax or anything similar) decided to have a weekly sale on their products. You could only see the product on sale that week if you were logged in to Facebook - the information was not available without an account.

I do have a Twitter account but I do not tweet. I got the account because a number of people/organizations are using Twitter the way they once would have used RSS feeds. By having the account, I can easily set up "feeds" that I want to read (including maybe 1 or 2 Parallax-related ones :) ).

Let's face it. Sooner or later some criminal/prankster mastermind is going to figure out how to correlate all that data on Facebook and achieve some kind of globally disruptive hoax/fraud/identity-theft/you-name-it, after which the entire social network frenzy will implode.

The internet as a whole is a great thing, so why people have carved out this pseudo-semi-exclusive subset of it with Facebook is beyond me. It's as though somebody built a 2 billion lane highway but then everyone wants to ride on the little white line next to the shoulder. BTHOOM!
