IMO, the direct-from-China merchandise comes with substantial risk. I've found out there are domestic (domestic to them) versions of widely exported products, and the domestic versions have lower quality standards, and sometimes no quality standards at all. I suspect some of it might actually be rejects.
I just encountered this when buying several case loads of IR remote controls. A full 50% (that's right, five - oh - percent) were defective! They know it's too expensive to return them, so in the end, they cost as much as non-gray market goods. (If hassle is included in the cost, they were far more expensive.)
You're a braver man than I am, Erco. I don't think I'd want to try non-prime li-poly batteries, at least not unless I knew my fire insurance was all paid up. Not delivering their stated capacity would be far from my main concerns.

Good point. This isn't an issue with the NiMH batteries, in fact their internal resistance is so high they probably wouldn't burn if you dead shorted them. Anyway, on that front I've started recharging the test pack. We'll see if they grow capacity like some fresh domestic cells do.

Depending on shipping cost, those might be useful for somebody...
