My wife and I are fine (although she is momentarily stuck at work as train services are stopped). Mobile email and voice are rather shaky. Still not clear about other family members.

Glad to hear that, Kuroneko. Kobe, where my sister & her family are staying, does not seems to be affected that much either.

    This is big disaster.
    The dead exceed 300.
It seems almost because of Tunami.

It's hard to comprehend a quake of that magnitude. Even here in Washington State and down in Oregon, the coastal areas are bracing for tsunami waves -- albeit not huge ones. (The tsunami warning sirens here in town have not sounded, so I don't think the inland waters will be affected much, if at all.)

Kuroneko, it's good to hear that you and your wife are safe. I hope the same remains true for others who are dear to you.

Kuroneko, I'm happy to hear you and family are ok! We experience a lot of earthquakes and the ones over 7 are really something to go through, like a roller coaster ride. I had a reference outside the window and the skyscraper where I was swayed 24-feet from side to side. (it cracked in the support walls but held up) A few moments before the quake started, it sounded like a very close jet aircraft going overhead but nothing was seen in the sky - apparently it was a warning from the tectonic plates grinding and shifting.

Here's some jaw-dropping footage of the tsunami in Miyagi Prefecture:

The swath of destruction in its wake is hard for the mind to grasp.

My prayers go out to people in Japan.

In the Video that Phil Posted, at about 2:42 in, did anyone notice the two people on motorcycles? Looks like the one guy going right on the screen got trapped, the guy going down on the screen might have found a way out. Man-o-man!!!!

What an awful sight. What an awful disaster. The Japanese sent 120 USAR team to Christchurch. And now NZ is sending a USAR (30ish?) to Japan.

kuroneko: I am pleased you are all ok. The news is so bad, particularly from the tsunami and now the reactors. I understand the main island has moved 2.4m (8ft) and the earths axis has also shifted.

Yesterday we travelled by boat on a tour of the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, so we were fortunate no tsunamis hit here.

Of late I must say I am pleased the international community is helping with all these disasters. At least the search & rescue teams have finished in Christchurch NZ and can be now be deployed in Japan.

Our thoughts are with all those affected by this disaster.

You might want to check out https://www.facebook.com/ussronaldreagan

From USS Ronald Reagan Commanding Officer:
"""Friends and Family of USS Ronald Reagan: I want to take this opportunity to personally assure you that first and foremost all personnel aboard the USS Ronald Reagan are safe and healthy. During our mission to assist our close allies of Japan, we were ...operating near the radioactive plume from Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant. As you may have already heard, radioactivity was detected on 17 personnel from our ship, however, we promptly took the proper precautions and the radioactivity was easily removed by using soap and water. The levels that were detected were very low levels. To put this into perspective, the maximum radiation dose received was equalt to the amount of natural background radiation one would receive in one month from sources such as rocks, soil and the sun. Ronald Reagan has since repositioned away from the Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant. As a nuclear-powered aircraft carrrier, we have extensive technical expertise onboard to properly monitor such types of risks, and if necessary, rapidly resolve the situation. We have taken all the necessary precautions to ensure that everyone is safe. We have closely monitored spaces, evaluated everyone who has flown or worked on the flight deck and cleaned the aircraft. I have not seen any levels of radiation or contamination that would cause me to have any significant concerns at all. As we continue to assist Japan in this terrible catastrophe, our Sailor's--and your loves ones'-- safety will remain at the top of my priority list. Capt. Thom BurkeSee More

All you out on the west coast, and everyone at parallax, should fire up your Geiger counters.

    Just to be safe.

Parallax should stock a Geiger kit! :)

The world greives for all the victims of this disaster, My heart goes out to all.

A pint of blood by it self, is not much, but I felt better having to wait in line to give..

A Community Service Caution to ALL:

I hate that I have to caution You wonderfully generous folks, about some not so generous folks..
My "catcher account" has no less then seven scam letters asking for cash donations.
If You don't know what a "catcher account" is, don't worry about it, it's not important. Just know that there
are unscrupulous people out there, that are well..Unscrupulous,
And will say things that just aren't true in order to get your donation cash sent to them, instead of the right people.

Four of these letters(so far) have been misspelled redirects, one in particular looks like it is sent by
British Red Cross, but it's not. it's a redirect to a different web site, not a very good site, lots of links to click..bad bad.

ALLWAYS CHECK THE SPELLING OF THE URL BEFORE YOU CLICK. I know You know this.
better yet, type in the URL yourself, and you will be more sure of going to the right spot.

Anyways, I hate to be the guy that has to bring this nasty subject to the front. but I beleive it is important.

The New York Times is reporting that reactor 2's containment vessel appears damaged.
    wrote:
"We are on the brink. We are now facing the worst-case scenario,” said Hiroaki Koide, a senior reactor engineering specialist at the Research Reactor Institute of Kyoto University. “We can assume that the containment vessel at Reactor No. 2 is already breached. If there is heavy melting inside the reactor, large amounts of radiation will most definitely be released."

    All--

    Re: Nuke problems

Wouldn't it be nice if investigative reporting still existed? About the only thing I have been able to conclude from media "news" reports is that the situation is steadily worsening. If true, the Japanese government needs to start digging some deep holes in which to push these reactors.

    Hole-->concrete-->reactor-->concrete

The lower level of concrete must be designed to separate the molten material as it drains out of the reactor vessel. So, the revised method looks like this . . .

    Hole-->concrete-->wooden forms-->concrete-->reactor-->concrete

What's wrong with this latch ditch solution? (It needs to be implemented when the "handwritting is on the wall" rather than later.)

These things exploded. And if they are buried(really big hole), they contaminate the sea water due to proximity to shore? (probably already contaminated)

If they could be buried, then comes fallout issue. Over there this is an issue, even in the west coast perhaps.

Fallout can be cleaned up using hexapods.

Perhaps a better solution would be industrial sized hexapod with spray paint to mark radioactivity and geiger type detectors plus gps.

It wouldn't be that expensive to build an army of these. I mean for most governments.

Robotic "Radiation" Farmer, similar to prospero.
    http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?128752-My-robotic-farmer-Prospero

We should already have hexapod "maintenance" units for situations exactly like this. Car sized hexapods to operate in hazardous nuclear situations. They would run on multiple car batteries, most likely have 3 phase brushless motors, and multiple "tools" for cutting, welding, gripping, etc.

Smaller units could be useful for visual inspection.

End of video mentions that "work that needs to get done, can't get done due to radioactivity."

    Cue: robots.

Hexapod robotic devices like this are needed yesterday.
