Parallax RFID reader and Extra Small RFID Tags...

Hi guys,

I just got an RFID kit which comes with a parallax RFID serial reader and some tags. Among the tags I have the rectangular card sized ones and some small ampules (like these http://www.trossenrobotics.com/store/p/3618-Extra-Small-Glass-Ampoule-Tag.aspx). I got the reader to work fine with the card tags, but I can't get it to work with these small tags. They use the EM4102 protocol such as the reader and the card tags. What could be the problem?, Do you now a way to make this work?. Thank you for your comments.

Best regards!

I've used the extra-small glass ampoule tags and they work fine with Parallax's RFID reader. The range isn't as far as what you get with the larger tags, but they do work. The ampoules do have to be aligned roughly along the axis of the reader's coil.

Thanks for your reply, as you said, the extra small ampoule tag does work, but poorly. It must touch the reader in order to be read and that isn't useful. Is there a way to juice up the reader to increase it's reach? Or do you know other serial readers that are more powerful?. Thanks!

I've used another RFID reader whose datasheet is attached. It requires a separate coil which I wound myself using a sewing machine bobbin. It seems to have slightly better range than the Parallax RFID reader, but not a lot more, maybe 2-3". You can't "juice up" the Parallax reader.
