Okay, thanks Jim. Though, I thought there was only a rev1 and a rev2...

I checked my local on Wednesday, and it was one of The Shack's that doesn't carry Parallax, though the one in the Mall is supposed to. I might head there tonight...

Hover 1,
Take one to the counter and ask for a price check. The store may not have gotten the clearance price posted.

lucky me -- cleaned out 2 local stores. 8 in hand...now I have another toy to play with and I already have some uses for them. If you find any store with them have them check the price at the register because the clerks at the local stores didn't know about the clearance and the prices on the store shelves were still listed at full price.

Jim,

Thanks for the heads-up!

I bought two the RFID readers and two of the·light to frequency converters.· Great deals.

Too bad that Radio Shack decided to stop selling them - wish there was more interest in electronics/microcontrollers/etc and more items and components available locally...

Jim,

Thanks for your terrific post!

I bought two the RFID readers, Parallax part number 28140, RadioShack part number 276-0032, both units I got included 1 of the RFID 54mm x 85mm Rectangle Tags Parallax number 28141, and 1 of the RFID 50mm Round Tags Parallax part number 28142, the units cost me $9.97 each.

I bought three of the light to frequency converters sensors, Parallax part number 27924 ,RadioShack part number 276-003, $1.97 each for these.

I have to check out a few more stores to see if they have any of these items in stock.

Thanks,

My local Shack just got the price changes yesterday. Scored the last two RFID modules. I love saving 60 bucks!

They were already out of the light to frequency converter before the price change :(

The one in Gig Harbor had two RFIDs and four light to frequencies. Plus they give 25% off if you buy five or more parts. Quite the deal.

They're all out now BTW.

I picked up the last 2 (pretty sure that is all they have ever had) at my Shack in Southern Illinois this weekend. There did not seem to be any of the light to frequency converters and the staff just gave me a very odd look when I asked :( . On a semi-related note take a look at this article I found this morning on Wired. I want a shack like this in my neighborhood.

www.wired.com/magazine/2010/04/ff_radioshack

My favorite part was the very last sentence (make sure you click "full article" at the bottom to see the rest and all the pictures).

I called my local store several days ago about the RFID, their computer showed two in stock but after looking, the guy said they weren't there. I stopped by yesterday just in case he was wrong and indeed, they had still had one.

So, better to check in person than to rely on a sales person checking for you.

Picked up a total of 3 RFID readers. Found some more but couldnt justify needed 5 total. Now Im going and cleaning out the light to frequency converters. I did get 15% off for buying two parts drawer products at once.
I couldn't find 5 things I had money for to get 25% off. haha.

It's really worth reading the entire article. It documents their history and explains a lot about recent changes at Radio Shack, a.k.a. RadioShack, a.k.a. the Shack. (Identity crisis?) It makes you wonder how long it will be before you can't even get batteries there anymore. "Double-A? Oh, no sir, you must be thinking of WalMart. We carry only triple-A-quality cell phones at the Shack ... er ... excuse me, the Wireless Ranch. We just changed our name again last week."

Thanks for the heads-up. I got the last units at my SoCal store.

I was extremely disappointed to read the tolerance specs on the light-to-frequency converter: 20%! Come on, a unit with multiple photodiodes and an A/D converter should be well under 5% tolerance. For interfacing to a Stamp, I can do better than 20% with a dollar grab bag of photocells from Hosfelt. So no big surprise to me that these L-F converters are on clearance. But the RFID reader looks promising.

What does that mean exactly? Is that 20% variance from one sensor to the next for the same light level or up to 20% variance between readings on the same sensor?

@Rich: Specs at http://www.parallax.com/Store/Sensors/ColorLight/tabid/175/CategoryID/50/List/0/SortField/0/Level/a/ProductID/88/Default.aspx·It starts out quite impressively: The TSL230R has an input dynamic range of 160dB; that is, it can measure light over a range of 100,000,000-to-1. But then it all falls apart for me : Absolute output frequency tolerance of +/- 20% , so 2 different units could read 40% different...

Not nearly interchangeable enough in today's ·one-size fits all world.

According to the datasheet that Parallax links, there are two other model numbers, one with 5%, the other 10% tolerance. From Mouser, the price across the range of all 3 is only about a $.50 difference.
