Not to be a pain in the Smile and hijack the thread, but your sig image reloads are killing my cache. Aren't images in sig's against the forum rules?

I don't get the requirement.Could you explain it better?
I made parts for rapid prototyping in the past (stereolitography), but the requirements were different..

My printer does not use suport material. As a result if you draw a 3d v in the z access the sngle of slope can't excede 45 deg from verticle.

can you recommend any particular books that are good for learning sKetchup? Or maybe indicate ones that are NOT so good?

Yes, some of the YouTube videos are quite good.

I'd recommend getting comfy with using groups and components early on. Basically, these tools allow the management of geometry and have similar characteristics but your job of geometry creating & editing will be much, much easier when using groups &/or components.

For example, when you create a table, make a leg into a component - pattern it, then change one leg and they all update. Also, components can quickly & easily be sent to and imported from from storage (hard drive, USB drives, & so forth). If you ever wanted just one table leg to be different, you can make the component "unique" which maintains the component property but that leg won't update when any of the other table legs change.

Yeah - perhaps here's another useful link (I hope this link works):

    forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=79&t=12706&sid=06add70d7596826da8492bdb22c7da03

I can't recommend any books - I'd enjoy writing one. I am a contributing author for an AutoCAD book - I've been using AutoCAD since 1986, I've been Autodesk Certified to teach it for many years and, I really loathe AutoCAD (no typos).

That's very interesting. I've wondered how AutoCAD users regard Sketchup and whether or not it's actually worth learning. When you write the book on it, do post a notice here. smile.gif

There is a Sketchup for Dummies out that covers Ver 7. I got mine at Barnes and Noble, but it's available at Amazon also.

I don't know if that book, Ver. 7 for Dummies is any good but the changes in the recent free versions are not extremely significant so, if you can get a much cheaper book, it could be worth it - the updates/changes for each version are listed chronologically, so one could start out with the older book and then blah, blah, blah. I've had good success with cheap-cheap books via half.com (hope it's ok to mention that source here)

Also - all educators can receive a SketchUp Pro version free - fill out the paperwork, it's really easy. Some of the Pro features are very nice but not 'essential' in order to have a most remarkable 3D CAD tool.

would be nice if there was a way to type in dimensions. For example if i want to draw a piece that interfaces with a servo i want the piece to be very precise dimensions.

You can use as much precision as desired. Some people assume incorrectly that given the name "SketchUp" there won't be allowances for precision - just not true whatsoever.

    Mctrivia,

When you use the line, you can click in one spot and then just type in the number for the length. I just now found that out; you can also do an n-gon this way.

My attempt at a Propeller Beanie. It doesn't meet the 45deg overhang requirements, but I can't see how a propeller beanie could.
Might try and print it on my makerbot just out of interest.

make it as 2 pieces. this will allow the top to actually spin and make it possible to print. Will have to change the angle of the blades though to something a little more vertical.
