Wow!
No available 40 pin DIP props until November! :(
Mouser and Digikey are out as well.
I suppose I'll have to start using the LQFP in my projects.

    Here's a place where DIP's are still available: parallaxdirect.com/cart/index.php

Also, IIRC, Fry's Electronics has DIP's still available online.

Be warned that if you order from Frys you stand a good chance of getting an un-usable chip. Several people reported in another thread on this subject that the pins were bent so bad that the chip was unsuable. I ordered two from Frys and got lucky in that only 5 or 6 pins on each chip were bent and were easy to straigthen. The packageing was just to put the chips in a static bag and then into a padded shipping envelope. If a heavy box gets put on top during shipping, then by by chip.

A prop dip comes with Brian's Spin Studio or with my Propeller Platform. That might be an option...

We've just taken delivery of the P8X32A wafers and they're on the way to the packaging place in Taiwan. Shouldn't be long now - maybe 30 days. I know - that's an eternity if you wanted one yesterday.

I think it'd be fascinating to see a photo-diary follow a chip from Fab to warehouse.

    Hi Ken,

How did this happen? Either there's a problem in the supply chain, inventory management, or somebody bought a truck-load of DIP Props. If it's the latter then Parallax should put a DIP version of the PropII on the roadmap.

    Cheers, David

I think they already explained the snafu. As I understand it recent uptick in demand outpaced the replacement supply replenishment and by the time it was apparent they would be out it was too late to do much about it given the fabrication time.

I would also caution you on a Fry's order. They have them but they will come in various stages of pin mangeling, from mildly bent to flattened and twisted together. Even a few cents of foam in the pack would have helped but I guess they can't spare it at $13.00 a chip.

    Thanks everyone for the info.
It seems all of my projects have gravitated towards using the Prop.
In fact my PIC Kit 2 programmer has been relegated exclusively to light logic analyzer duty.

Has anyone noticed? It looks like the DIP propellers are out again! At least for a month and a half.

Hmmm, might be time to build up a big batch of my M44D40+ modules; it was, after all, designed during the 2009 shortage............

    Ahem...

Propellerpowered's had them in stock for the last month. There's one left and I'm negotiating for dozen more.

I was going to give some of my DIPs away at last UPEW, but couldn't find them in my rush to leave the house.

I have far too many Propeller chips and boards. Maybe I should ship them to OPC for the "free table". :-)
