Anyone ever hack a Peek?

Target had these on clearance for $7.47. I figured that for that price it might be worthwhile to hack since it has a color LCD, qwerty keypad, rechargeable battery, and AC adapter. Has anyone ever hacked into one before? I will be opening mine soon to see what components are inside.

That looks like a great hack platform! If you buy one and can get it open, let me know.

I bought one and the display looks pretty good. The case is actually aluminum and not cheap plastic. I haven't taken it apart yet because I found out that there are people trying to port Linux to it and I thought that I would like to try that first if they get it working. I also thought that this would make a slick input and display device for a propeller.

Next time I am in the us I will have to pick one up. Add an infrared transiever and this would make a cool remote.

@CounterRotatingProps
Let me know if you find any good ways to interface to this thing. I still haven't taken mine apart because I was waiting to see if the people trying to get Linux to work on it have any success. I do know that it has a serial port connection available on the charger connector. If a program could be developed for this that had a serial RS232 command based graphics driver and send out ASCII keyboard codes, it would be a slick interface for the Propeller.

The bandsaw might be a little overkill.freaked.gif I think that I'll go with using a torx screwdriver. If that doesn't work, I'll progress to the power tools. (I don't have a bandsaw. But, I do have a chainsaw. Do you think that will work?)

I found what appears to be the development platform but it is $1150 and Digikey sells it for $1299.41.

The product is for high volume manufacturers so good luck in getting a datasheet apart from buying the development platform.

It is probably best to let someone else do the work, keep an eye on what others are doing and possibly adapt it later unless you have deep pockets and can afford it.

My wife is taking my daughter clothes shopping at Target, so I told her to get me the cheapest one (even if its pink).· I hope they are still still on clearance,·but if not they are only $15.· Sounds like its going to be a fun project.

At my Target, they were $10.50 on clearance - but the pink one is $13.79. No difference in functionality - just expensive pink :)

These devices are so nice, it's almost a shame to hack them. I am impressed with it so far. Then again, we shall improve the scope of their use, eh?

I bought three - one to sacrifice, one to prototype, and one *maybe* to use as it was intended.

[Some pics to follow...]

peek001.jpg·Wallwart is USB 5v @700mA bat is LiI 3.7v, 700mAh.

Keys are tiny, but have solid detent.· For as small as it is, the screen seems pretty big, c.a.·2" x 1.5"

peek002.jpg·On/Off on top corner, nice digital scroll wheel, button on side below wheel.

All feel like good quality components.

peek003.jpg·The ubiquitous USB port - our doorway to voltage - and hackdom?· It's got some odd sliced openning there on the top back side - not sure yet what it's for.

peek004.jpg·Batt.compartment case open... eeww ... two labels that say "DO NOT REMOVE" ... of course, they are the first things to come off...

peek005.jpgWell, ok then. One (left center) was a "Void your warranty 'cause you·unscrewed this screw." But the other (center above bar code serial nums)·looks far more interesting... It looks like it might be a flash card.

Well folks, Phish is right. I won't need to take the bandsaw or the plasma cutter to get further in... Torx will do. (What ever happened to the good-old, adult-proof case?)

This is nothing so far... just wetting the whistle for more fun ...·Anyone further along?

Hack first, think later ... or some such rolleyes.gif

I've always wondered ... are those SIM cards easily accessable, or is it common to mangle/encrypt the data ?

Chuck, do you think you can find that link again?· This might be their other device (see below).

There's conflicting info out there... the one I've got may have only 8 megs.···
It is said·to be·a TI ARM7 - but not sure which yet till I crack it open :)

LINUX on Peek:
http://www.linuxpromagazine.com/Online/News/Peek-Presents-Challenge-Linux-on-Peek

TI Supports Linux open source on it's omap platforms:
http://focus.ti.com/general/docs/wtbu/wtbusplashcontent.tsp?templateId=6123&contentId=4752

Several sources state that they think this may be the cheapest Linux device out there to date.
@Phish - if you can still get them at $7.47 - maybe you outta snarf up a bag full :^)

@Chuckz - indeed this could be a cool, smart interface to a Prop.· And considering that the Peek.com rates are $15/month and going down (read rumors that they were even considering *free* access - how??) ... had an offer for 9.99 /mon unlimited.·· Get Linux going, hook up a Prop and a·Parallax/Grand GPS, sending SMS out on the 3G network - and you've got one inexpensive live datalogger/tracker.·T-mobile is the Peek carrier.

Tangental Aside Note: These devices do ONLY email BUT ...

For those of you who've not looked at the peek site, there's another version called the "Pronto" - it can do PDF's and Word Docs ... that device costs $70. Considering that the first Amazon Kindle is $200, their new one @$300,·and Sony's reader·~$250 the Pronto's not too shabby. Granted, it can't do the book formats, but most of the stuff we read any more is html, word docs, or PDF. [RANT] and how the *heck* did PDF get to be the defacto document standard? PDF=Pretty Demented Format. [/RANT]

First software hack (actually I got it from cust service :) :

Go to the registration page, don't enter anything, scroll down to 'email' field and type

#peek-cit#

very interesting...

If you have the correct version (the oldest ones it seems) they will upgrade you free to a Pronto ($59) - you just have to mail it to them. Call cust service to check your version.

> Those pics don't make the peek look very hack friendly

it actually is easy to open - four T-6 torx screws and a snap case. Got it open in < 2min. Closed again in < 3 ... and it still works <hehehe>. Yes, the connectors are very small, so this could be difficult. But there are several 'mystery' pads (6 and 1) that look interesting.

Here's the next exploded view (sorry, crappy webcam):
