Poll: How about beeing sarcastic ONLY in the sandbox ?

Hello,

as a poll does not work only add ONE reply per member to this thread of your answer to the question is YES

so by the number of replies it will be easy to see how many forum-members agree

I would like to make a suggestion:

beeing ironic or sarcastic or mocking about things that are more or less off topic can make a lot of fun.
Of course not to everyone.

How about moving this kind of threads to the sandbox or continuing it in the sandbox ?

So everybody that enjoys posting ironic ideas making others post LOL ROFLOL, CFTDIDTDFL (call for the doctor I'm in danger for dying from laughing)
can do so and all others are no longer disturbed by threads without propeller-related substance

best regards

Stefan

Maybe we just need to remind a few to review the forum guidelines.

A few have crossed the line on 2 and 4... Let's pull them back in and put this forum back on track.

Does that include these threads?· Now you've got two off topic threads here.

I'll agree it can be frustrating when things get out of hand, but it's just as easy for you to ignore a thread you find off topic.· It's not like there are many of them here.· And the one in question is limited to a single instance.

I'd say a vast majority of forum visiters here are hobbyists...· It's not like this is the IEEE forum.· It can be equally offputting when everybody's too uptight.

There is no danger of this forum getting too uptight. :)

The issue is not so much OT posts as being polite and not flooding a thread with sarcastic/unhelpful/unkind comments. That sort of thing is far more likely to put folks off from posting.

Actually you'd be surprised how many here are more than simple hobbyists.
    There's a lot of professionals, EE's, and PH'd's here.

The Propeller seems to draw a higher grade of people. It's part of the reason I started the expos.

Yeah right. Let's get rid of sarcasm. What a great idea. And while we're at it, let's rid ourselves of creative insight - now there's a problem maker for ya!

I'd rather people posted a schematic to illustrate their words -- for example, decoupling caps are frequently advised but never seen -- but I think most would agree that a quick response from the wise is one of the strengths of this forum.

Hairshirts are seldom welcome; we lost deSilva over just such an issue. I'll put up with snide if the info is right.

Wow, Fred, looking at this thread, deSilva also came to mind. He was a great asset to this forum. For those of you who weren't around when deSilva was posting - the guy had a bit of harsh humor, but IMO he was up there with the greats Mike Green, Phil Pilgrim, etc. I was really sad to see him go.

I give a half "Yes"... Rather than moving the thread to the sandbox(where it may not be read again), I'd say let a moderator chime in and whip people back on topic. Chris Savage does a pretty good job of this already, BUT I can see your point, Stefan. I've seen some threads go on for a full page of posts with people exchanging witty remarks. It can be annoying sometimes...

Uh, If this guy was in the same league as Mike Green then about the only reason I would want him banned would be something like posting kiddie porn...I'm serious.
It only takes a few minutes to spot Mike as a genius of the 1st order.... almost nothing is bad enough to want such a mind banished from a tech forum.

Really creative tech people are sometimes a bit quirky.... if you don't give them a wide berth they will move on...and it will be your loss!

Now theres an example of how the written word can be misunderstood , which happens quite frequently in this type of environment.

I respect people that have worked for an education but that does not necessarily make them "higher grade" , I am sure this is not what was meant.

    But I'm British!

Sarcasm, puns and ironic humour are the only things left, here, now. It would be like a gagging order.

    Good. (I'll say it first)

I have wondered what would force a moderation (not that I wish to push any point that far)

    Hello Everybody,

as this thread does not work as a simple counting Yes-postings - I give in.
I didn't wanted to mention this hm - what ever kind you call it - KISS OS-thread directly
but that KISS-OS-thread lead me to start this poll-thread.

OK OK if I think over it:
as long as there are not more than 25 threads similar to that KISS OS-thread
so you have to switch to the second site of the thread-overview it's not too difficult to step over these off-topic threads.
and still find propeller-related questions of all niveaus from newbee to expert.

So as I cannot delete this thread anymore to give propeller-related threads more space
please stop posting on this thread and add your comments on sarcasm or not in the KISS OS-thread
(which will become a synonym for anounce something high-tec talk a little bit about it theoretically and make the members start kidding)

    best regards as always

    Stefan

I do agree this bashing thing has to stop. Bringing education in to things is a whole different issue and sure to prolong the utter misery for all involved.

Toby, What might cause Moderation? Asking for real UK PAL output from the Propeller? That should do it. An amazing device apart from this. Have some better hopes for Prop II. On a brighter note is great to see we have more choices here in the UK with Spinvent's great service in operation.

    Regards

    Mike.

Anyone who has been involved in groups or forums for any period of time knows there are a large variety of people.· Some want to help others (thank goodness!!!), some need information, some enjoy the conversations, some want to take your money (thank goodness not too many).·There seems to always be one person that constantly posts to forums while at the same time trying to make a buck off of everybody (I call it posting for dollars).· But what makes this person bad is there constant and ongoing belief in their own B.S.

They can be very pursasive and often times they have many followers.· I frankly detest people like this much more than I disslike the banter that usually surrounds these people.· In my experiences, I have seen enough people get screwed out of money because they bought the line of pooh that was being presented.· If someone has a good product (That actually exists and not based on a future promise-aka vaporware), then they should be welcomed and treated with respect (as is the case with many people on this forum).·However, when the history of a person·shows they have made similar failed promises in the past, then they should be the subject of ridicule. Sooner or later they finally give up and go away.

As is always the case in life, those with enough experience to know better, should do what they can to protect those who are easy prey to·be taken advantage of.·

My vote is to allow the banter and help prevent others from being missled.

Chris -·who·really likes this forum as it·does have a very large percentage of really great people.·

I feel like I've earned an award this week for avoiding sarcasm, after not responding to this thread:

    http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?p=832127

    which posed this question:

Is it possible to count above 65535?·

It's killing me to have let such a great straight line pass by unused. I will regret it for the rest of my life.

From what I gather, yes, it was voluntary on deSilva's end. Like I said, he had a bit of(I think) german humor which may not have come across as friendly at times. Personally, I liked his dry humor, but I think some people were offended. I can't speak for everyone, but I think much more people were sad to see him go, than glad. If he still roams the forums and he reads this, I sure hope he'd come back.

I was very sorry to see DeSilva go. He could be wickedly pointed, but never meant ill by it, and that was part of his inimitable charm.

I think a good rule of thumb for sarcasm is this: if a beginner asks a noob question, restrain yourself. The clouds of ignorance must be dispelled gently. If a more experienced person says something stupid, what the heck, unleash the dry wit! There's no reason tech discussions can't be lively! But sinking to ridicule and mockery should be out of bounds. It's just bad manners.

Now, Stefan, what is it about the Sandbox that makes you think it deserves a less, shall we say, "elevated" level of discourse than this forum? It's a little like saying that certain neighborhoods deserve less police protection than others! smile.gif

I Vote No! Although maybe the thread could have been moved to the sandbox once it degenerated.

I restrained for a while (on the referred to threads) and just asked very pointed technical questions. As soon as I did another thread was started, but of course no answers on the previous one.

In the end, many of us got fed up with the silly claims and so what could we do - we had a laugh. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with that - it brough some fun back to life even though it was off topic. Some comments were OTT. Regulars knew to step over the thread, unless of course they wanted to catch up with the fun, and anyone who didn't understand could soon realise that this was vaporware.

Here's an off topic on an off topic tread (only irony). I have better results with a 6MHz rock, the chroma beating is much better. I do not have any 6.25MHz ones to try so I do not know if this is just a "lucky frequency" or for a better, mathamatical reason.

Mike Green is the model. Always polite. Always helpful. Never rude or sarcastic. KNOWs almost everthing and where to find it. There are many others too... As I have often said - these forums often answer questions I didn't even know I had.

As long as there are posters and posts like that here - I will participate.
