wise thing to do. resister and caps are good place to start. i linked a real of caps that was $17 for 4000 caps. get twezers and try solderng to pads.

Spark fun sells unpopulated boards by the bag that could be good for practice.

I would like to use smt regulators on ds2760's and use smt caps and resistors on everything except the power supply.

All the chips that I am using are smt so the pins are very small and very close together. Also I would like to fit this in a 3 x 3 or 3 x 4 inch board. The relays are very small about the width of a quarter so I wont be needing a lot of space for those.

I only need to add one more 3 pin standoff for the 4x20 lcd display. I am struggling a bit with diptrace. I looked at eagle and it has a huge learning curve, maybe later.

is this battery powered? switching is best for that.

Actually, the current system has a 12-14v dc door bell transformer in it to control the gas valve. I was thinking I could find a 6 or 7 volt dual transformer similar to the one I already have and pull one pin with 6 volts to run the prop board and pull 2 pins to get the 12-14 volts to run the gas valve. I am sure I will need to use a rather large resister on the 6 volt into the prop board to prevent feedback from t he 2 combined pins.

opto isolators are a good safety precaution when using higher voltages.

Just remembered that I did not answer 1 of your questions. Some surface mount components use printed codes on them to show what they are some don't show anything. a lot of my 0603 resisters(wich i have about 100,000 of) have no markings at all. i keep them either on the reals(which is how you get if you buy by the 4000) or for those i use less often i keep in a grey perfectly sealed smd parts holder i found long time ago. keeping track of them and seperated is very important unless you want to meter them all out.
