Geek plans for Superbowl?

It's a shame we don't have a poll for this.. :)

As a true geek I have little use for the Superbowl, always looking for a better use for the time.
(When I wasn't talked into running the media/soundroom for some church Superbowl party. Most
of my work was switching out the beer ads for something a little more church friendly.)

I'm curious.. What do the rest of the Parallaxian's do Superbowl Sunday?

Me.. My basement lab is in serious need for teardown and reorganization for 2009.
Perhaps we should propose a #propeller irc chat tomorrow night. :)

Do geeks really watch football? (Yeah, I know, Americans call it "football")

If the weather's nice, do something outdoors, get some shopping done, and anything else to take advantage of there not being many folks out and about. Something really geeky to try: put a pressure sensor on your water line and see if you can determine when it's halftime. smile.gif

I may stop by the local gathering for the free food, but other than that it's the nose to the grindstone...

My co-workers are having a super bowl commercial party. Basically you get together, eat, play games, socialize and watch the multi-million dollar commercials. A few people are actually into the game. I hope to duck out before half time.

And if it weren’t so darn expensive.... If every registered forum member donated $200.35 we could purchase a 30 min segment (or is that 3 min segment?)

Ivar's, a locally-renowned Seattle clam eatery has purchased a 1/2-second commercial, according to last evening's news.

    Mike2545,

LOL- you may be right... I heard something on the radio about it this morning. Could have been $3 million dollars for 30 seconds.

I'm surprised that in the present state of the economy that things like the Superbowl aren't toned down. I mean people are loosing their jobs, houses, 401K's, stock portfolio's and sense of security. It's a sad commentary on what people -hate to use it "Joe six pack"- think is important.

USA today had a big front page article on friday about superbowl ads. It was 2 million dollars average to produce the add, and 3 million dollars to get the space. Still some spaces left according to the article... If only parallax had $5 million...

    Beau,
Probably more like 30 seconds, and to what purpose? If you were lucky there might be 2 people watching who had even the slightest clue of what you were talking about.

2million for the add and 3million for the space - good grief that's insanity ... If Parallax could afford that I am pretty sure that's not the way it would be spent !

Now if Parallax had a robot that could fetch beer and snacks, handicap bowl games and horse races, feed the dog, tend small children, and provide thoughtful, sensitive answers to relationship questions, the Super Bowl would be an excellent ad venue. I'm certain the payback would be rather quick, too, assuming they could keep up with the orders!

Years ago I heard somebody used a stopwatch to time exactly how many minutes the players actually did something (other than stand around and scratch their privates, adjust their underwear, etc) during a Sleeperbowl game. I think the grand total was 8 or 9 minutes. Geeez, 8 or 9 minutes out of.... how long? 4? 5? 6 hours of mind-numbing blither-blather? Sorry, but that's a signal-to-noise ratio that is just too low for my cortex to detect.

It's a great time to take your chick out shopping, though. Everything is empty. And she'll love you for it, brag about you to her friends, and no dudes will be looking at you like you're whipped or something.

And if you don't have a chick and you're looking for one, you'll surely stick out on Superbowl Sunday... one way or another.

    Hello All

I live in Central Fl. and work in Tampa. I can't get away from this superbowl Smile. It sucks. And the added in flux of Yankees from Pa. makes it even worse. Its bad enough that we have the Yankee vacationers, But when its doubled from the Stupid Bowl, Its really BAD here.

I'll Be glad when its over

Personally I usually try to watch tech videos and work on learning more about whatever hobby I have this year (although for the past couple years its been electronics)...

This year its chopping wood... all day... and half the night... long.

But hopefully I'll be spending the rest of the night alone with my fiance ;)

The only redeemable feature is the ads of course.. Which can be found on youtube the next morning.
    Nothing has ever beat this.
(Pretty much sums it up for all of them in my opinion. :)

I don't think I'm a geek, but then again, here I am on these forums.

I do enjoy the Superbowl usually, though the inane pageantry really bothers me. I'm interested in seeing Pittsburgh play, but I won't be watching because it is my (football-hating) girlfriend's birthday today, and I'm taking her out to the James Beard Award-winning Serbian restaurant up the block. It was pleasantly easy to get a reservation for the evening. I wonder why. smile.gif

Hulu.com has all the commercials nicely lined up for you to see. I particularly like the Pepsi:mcGrubber and the Monster.com. The Toyota one with the big burners and 'actual demonstration' was fascinating from a technical point of view. Makes me wonder how much is real, and how much is CG. That's the geek part, anyway.

Hmm. Let's see: auto racing vs. football, auto racing vs. football, watching paint dry vs. sitting in traffic. Wow. I dunno. That's a tough one.

Wow.. Just watched around 6 of the commercials on Hulu and simply can't bring myself
to watch any further. What a total waste of money. Been so long since I've watched
commercial ads (we ditched our TV) that I'm a little shocked by the juvenile level which
most of them are targeted toward. (The Pepsi:mcGrubber left me feeling isulted for
enjoying Macgyver.) Even disappointed in the Startrek trailer, it looks like
they may have sucked out the thought out of the concept and replaced it with CGI action stuff.

I must be getting old.. :)

    Back to prop'ing.. :)

I might get interested if they would combine the two sports. Football players tossing balls at each other while dodging traffic at the Indy 500.... I might watch that for a while.

The pepsi one is based on a series of SNL shows with a similar theme: Macgyver gets flustered one way or the other, and it blows up. I was actually quite surprised to see it there since it means they must have shelled out lots of cash to SNL to use the concept. More money down the drain...

I heard a Story on NPR that talked about adding a Microprocessor and GPS to a foot ball, then they could make more accurate calls, give better stats etc. the next step would be to add accelerometers to the players pads and see just how hard they are getting hit.

I don't think regular GPS would be accurite enough they would probally have to make a system that was ground based.

GPS can be highly accurate, I produce civil drawings for projects, now the contractors want the drawings in CAD, and not hard copies, so they can plug the numbers in to their GPS unit on their machines which tells them exactly how far down (or up) to grade a site... however, I hear that system is in the neighborhood of 50K. oops off topic

My geek plans involved playing some multiplayer video games with my family. Seems they’re just not into electronics the way I am. Go figure. =)
