Has Anybody - RS485

Has anyone built a multiprocessor system using RS485 to talk between units?
I'm constructing a system that is built up of smaller sub-systems controlling it's own small process of the machine.
Each sub-system seems to be fine on it's own, but I'd like to make a 'master' that orchestrates the entire process and reports back to / gets commands from a HID.
Maybe even a net server that users could log into for reports [using the interweb and any browser]
Currently my 'master' just monitors the I/O of the sub systems [as needed i.e. counts how many time an air cylinder is fired for production count]
so, 'upgrading' to a multidrop serial bus would allow unlimited reporting with less wiring [and noise issues].
... just food for though ...
