IRL 520 MOSFET Switch

I'm planning to use the attached circuitto swith a 12VDC fan on/off by switching the IRL520 MOSFET on and off.

In the final circuit, I will use a DS1620 to bias the IRL520 on and off.

With just the circuit shown in the attachment, how do I test its operation? Do I simply short the Gate to either +12VDC or GND (which rail turns it on and which turns it off) or do I have to use a resistor of a speciifc value in series with the Gate, and then connect to a rail?

Thought I would check before I try something and smoke it.

MOSFETS have a very high input impedance. Connecting the gate to Gnd and the supply + is how I test them. It's a good idea to have a resistor between the gate and Gnd (10k will do), so that it is normally off, and the gate isn't floating.
