Hi,

I have a Dallas DS1287A real time clock and i was wondering if i could read it with my BS2. I cant really find any info on how it outputs the time. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bryan

Discontinued device, really old; battery's probably dead, anyway.

This is a parallel bus RTC designed for use in a PC. It requires 12-14 I/O pins to use it which would use up most of your I/O pins on a BS2. You can add additional external logic to handle the I/O pins, but it would be easier to use a RTC designed to use an SPI or I2C interface. Have a look through the Nuts and Volts columns on the Parallax website. There are several columns that discuss I/O expanders and several columns on RTCs.

You will need the datasheets if you want to use it. Start with a websearch on the part number. Dallas Semiconductor has copies of all their datasheets on their website that you can download. Check there.

If you're bound & determined to engage in a futile exercise, it'll read and·write like the device in the attached datasheet.
