Rare Wheel Encoder Sensors Available: Strike Now!

Just found these rare, long-discontinued Hamamatsu P5587 sensors on Ebay now in several lots of 10 and 100. My favorite for DIY optical wheel encoders, as I used here: http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php/119343-Make-Your-Own-Encoders

Did I say RARE? Acroname is out: http://www.acroname.com/robotics/parts/R64-P5587.html Junun was the last source and dried up: http://www.junun.org/MarkIII/Info.jsp?item=48 Built-in amplifier, filter, Schmitt triggers, much more inside than your average photoreflector. Makes a $4 CNY70 look sickly in comparison. Also good for line follower sensors.

Strike now, this is a rare opportunity. You may never see these again. IMO, any self-respecting roboticist needs at least ten in his/her parts drawer, Amanda ! :) Heck, I bought a lot of 100 for $60 "best offer". But I'm a hoarder, don't ask to buy mine as long as this seller has some for sale! I have all sorts of plans for mine.

Perfect for Stingray wheel encoders. You'll need at least two for tach sensors, or four for quadrature encoders. I prefer simple tach sensors for use with high gear ratio motors since I KNOW which direction my wheels are going.

BTW, this encoder is fast, too. It's the same one I used in my 325 PPS quadrature encoder test at http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php/121179-Reading-Quadrature-Encoders?p=899765&viewfull=1#post899765

    Interesting. It's kind of surprising that a sensor would not be replace by something better. Did this part transistion to SMD or just go the way of the dodo? Also, I like to put a trim pot between the photo-transistor output and the Schmidt trigger input. That way I can trim the sensor until I get 50/50 output to the microcontroller. Does the built in amplifier do that, or do you move the sensor closer and farther until it's trimmed?

    You can adjust that ratio either with spacing, or varying the LED's series resistor.

    I was about to pull the trigger, when I notice the seller increased the price for 10 to $17.50. I guess it's still not a bad price with free shipping.

    That's a bit odd after I negotitated the eprice of a hundred down to $60. Maybe I ruined it for everyone? :)

    If five or more people here commit to buying ten from me, I'll try to get another lot of a hundred from the seller at that price and we can divy those up. I'm guessing probably ~$7 or 8 with shipping for ten if he goes for it. Erco is here to save you $$$!

    I sent an offer for the old price ($14.50), and he countered with $16.00. He said he was getting low on stock. WT? According to the two auctions, he has at least 400 available.

    Well, I bought 10 before I read your post.

    I owe 2 bucks to the college fund. :)

    I made an offer of $50 for 100pcs, but he countered with $75. I only offered $50 because I really don't "need" them.
    So once again it looks like erco got a great deal. Mumble...mumble...mumble..darn so and so...mumble...mumble..mumble... But I'm not bitter. ;)

    So I ordered ten for 17.50.. and seven minutes later I got an ebay email claiming it was dispatched! Not even Jeff (OBC) can ship that quickly.. let's see how this turns out.

    Interesting component and legendary... I have CNY70 sensors as an alternative. not a very good one.

    Hall effect sensors are another way to go. Some can count each tooth on a gear as it swings by.

    Apples and Oranges. How can you count the teeth on a CR servo or stepper? You need an optical encoder disk.

    I am actually leaning toward buying motors on Ebay with built-in quadrature encoders. The optical sensor has never been the big issue, making and attaching a good encoder wheel is very challenging for high resolution.

    The CNY70 might do fine for line following arrays.

    High resolution encoder wheels, (optical), are built into every printer since the 90's, maybe earlier.

    Could you expand on that?

    I am talking about making and putting encoder wheels on the ends of motor shafts.

    Are you suggesting that they can be salavaged from all and any printers since the 90s? I think not. I cannibalized my HP Inkjet and it had one optical encoder strip. The motors seems to be operating with some sort of PID arrangement and gears.

    Mice have had tiny optical encoders that might be useful for salvage. I have a few, but removing the shaft and drilling a hole dead center seems quite demanding.

    The appeal of buying motors with encoder systems is not just the encoders. The motors are generally very good quality as well. Better than the toy motors that I am fooling with most of the time.

    I find that sometimes it pays to use something that is well-built. Trying to DIY a whole project may be satisfying in some ways, but the project may be even better with a nice solid motor/encoder.

    T    his thread is about the sensors that erco found, not about quadrature sensors. There are many threads about that.

    I guess you feel I should not offer alternatives.. such as hall effect sensors or complete motor/encoder solutions.

    I just found that making my own encoders was a bit too much of what I don't want to do. I hope you can accept that. The motors that come with them have higher resolution and the optical encoder is actually enclosed and protected from dirt and debris. Full quadrature is provided.

    I have tried using CNY70 sensors and printing encoder wheels on 3.5" miniCD disks. It works pretty well, but everything was rather large.

    I won't pass judgement on Erco's solution, at least not a negative one.

    In sum, I get to explore how fully the Propeller will preform with these motors rather than how fully my own creation will preform. Things i build from scratch often are more work to keep together.

    I know that some want to save money, others want to DIY everything. I do a bit of both, but good motors with built-in encoders can free up a lot of time for other things.

    I was just pointing out that the thread is about optical sensors, so there was no need to bring up hall effect sensor in this thread.

    I have torn down printers from the 90's that had encoder wheels. That's not to say that you have not seen them. Just sayin' I have.

    As one forum member to another, I appreciate your almost 8,000 posts. There is a lot of info in there.

    He's still out of these sensors, but he said he might restock off Ebay now. :)

    Sounds like we plum cleaned out the Ebay seller of these sensors! At least the big lots of 100 are gone. Someone else also bought 200! The seller emailed me:
