Get one of those hardbound log books, they usually have a green or red fabric-like exterior, that will travel with the box.
Have someone build a wood box that just fits into the postal cardboard box. I think it adds "something" to have the same box traveling the world. Each person can sign the box, put a sticker on it or whatever. I can volunteer to build the box if no one else wants to - and it is agreed that it is a good idea.
I do like the idea of having a traveling wooden box but that just takes up more space that could be filled with electronic goodness :P . What does every one else think about the box? I really do like the idea of the bound book. This whole project is getting more and more elaborate. Not that there is anything wrong with that though :) . Next thing you know we will all have secret RFID cards to open it, maybe even a secret knock! LOL Just kidding...

I have quite a bit of aircraft grade lite ply and spruce. I think that is what I would use to make the box. I estimate that it would reduce the useable volume by about 14%, or 71 cu. in. out of a 514 cu. in. box.
Well, I named the forum I created, "The Fellowship of the Travelling Junk Box". It can, of course be changed...right now it is invisible while I figure out how to configure it for invite only.
I will PM you OBC..... Just wanted to make sure I had the cash to send it out again. I can afford $10. Oh, and why a wooden box? I have a blank PCB we could use instead!
Box is about half-full right now...
(and I haven't gone down to my electronics shop yet..) :)
I'll post some "official" rules in the new forum as soon as Chris gets the wrinkles out of the software.
Here's some guidelines for now...
* You'll probably want to get a fresh medium-flat-rate box from your post office or have the
mailman bring them (free of charge, can be ordered from the website.) Cost to ship the box is $10.70.
Please keep the same box (or fresh box) without substitutions.
* You may (and should!) take a picture of the box arriving at your location with some sneaky
peeks of the contents, but no one is to inventory the box online. (it's a surprise!)
Be sure and post in the official forum your experience with the box. You may say what you
found for yourself, and what you put in. (If you choose to)
* You have 1-week to ship the box to the next person. If in doubt, contact me!
* Write your name, date, city, and comments in the log book included. Keep it going.
* Please do not include items which are questionable, or dangerous. Chemicals, etc.
* Try to include items which are useful with the BASIC STAMP, PROPELLER, or robotics.
(If you are having trouble finding items, take a trip out on trash day and pickup a printer, etc.
Strip it down to savagable parts and include those which are applicable to the rule above.)
@Microcontrolled, the box is shipping your way Monday. :)
This box is codenamed "Silver" -- As we may want to start a couple others soon.
I will put a picture of my house (the first location) in the box. If everyone would do that, we could see where the box has been. OBC should start, but if he doesn't, I will.
I didn't know if you accidentally clicked the ignore button. You didn't reply to my PMs, but I mentioned them here. Anyway, you will need to send me some information to finish setting up the forum.
Don't know why this just popped into my head, but whenever you are signing the book that comes with the box, make sure you put down your screen name that you use here on the forums *also*. I was just thinking how neat this idea was then it occurred to me that I don't even know most of your names, let alone faces (I hope to change that at UPEC!). Anyway just figured I would mention that now before the box starts traveling.
BTW: Does any one have an actual propeller beanie that could be put in the box? Would be neat if we could all sign it and auction it off at one of the UPE's next year for a good cause or something.

Sorry about that.. The "Notiifcations" text fades into the theme I'm using on your board, so I may not have noticed it a couple times when I was over there. I'm replied to your PM. Need the password. :)
I did some checking yesterday... The same box which we can sent to each other in the US will cost us
$10.70 each time it goes from person to person. This is a reasonable price of admission for participating.
However, to ship the same box outside the US the rate is $42.00+ Priority mail, which we are using
allows us to pack as much stuff as will fit in the box, but when it leaves us weight becomes a "big" issue.
When the time comes we can take up a group collection to send it over to them. Then they can do the same to get it back to us. Looks like they will not be getting any cool motors and power supplies though haha. As a one time fee for shipping that over there I don't think that is to bad. MAYBE if some one is traveling from the US - overseas at some point in time in the future they can take it back with them :) . It would be even cooler if people that lived some what close together here in the states met for coffee or something and handed the box off. No shipping fees and there is nothing like some face to face geek talk.

Brian B (and all) - You can request access to the private forum by sending a private message to OBC on the Savage Circuits forum. He will send you a password which will grant you access. I will make sure it works right now.
Count me in, I think I could add some stuff to the box. Are there provisions for people who live in the same area? It would seem unfair to have some people not pay shipping, but it seems silly to have the box in the same area as others and not take advantage of it. Ofcourse that is assuming there happen to be others near you in the small group of people participating. This could be where some of the international shipping costs get taken care of maybe? Hmmm idk.
Anyway, sign me up. I could contribute, and I'd like to help something like this happen. :)
@mikediv, are any of the 486 mobos left??? could you throw in a proc, some ram, a hard drive??? I have a bunch of old ISA cards that I would like to reuse and can't bear to see them gethering dust in my storage area. As we;;, are all the PCMCIA cards gone? if not, do you have the telephone -> PCMCIA card cables for the modem cards? I would love to clean out what's left of those PCMCIA cards. If you can send those to Winnipeg, Manitoba then PM me for my address.
@OBC, great idea about the box, would love to participate, just not right now. I am going to have to put my hobbies on hold until the summer because I'm taking a bunch of accelerated courses :(
THANKS!!! :)
p.s, i'm hoping to go to UPEW next year...read about this year's expo on the forums and I was kicking myself for not going...gotta watch the back cover of Nuts&Volts more closely.
