Small Footprint Partless Programing

here is the challenge. How to program a device that has 6 pins without soldering on a header and taking up as little footprint as possible.

3.3V
TDI
TMS
TCK
TDO
GND

Best I have thought up is use a programing rig with 6x 0922-0-15-20-75-14-11-0 and have 6 1mm diameter pads on the board. some kind of physical alignment could be built to make aligning the programmer and the card.

Edge Connectors can not be used because there will be pins on all sides of board. Anyone else have a better suggestion?

I have a propmod-1x1 available as a price if anyone can think of a better way to do this(must be usable in my design)

vias in yellow are 4 jtag pins 3.3v can be easily accesed anywere on outside and gnd on inside of board.

.5mm grid

You can use pogo/test pins and a jig to make the connections directly to the IC or pads or vias.

by pogo do you mean the part number i have found?

ic is BGA so no physical contact to IC is possible.

ok so same idea but the pogo pins have longer travel then the part i found. making programing rig will be fun. unlike spark funs boards my board has parts on both sides and parts hanging off the edges to.

Still 1mm pads just fit in there. guess i will have to get board gold plated with this method.

Seems tim deleted his post. that link alone is worth the propmod though.

mctrivia, if the signals you want to connect to have pads or vias with enough space for the pogopins ( or something equivalent ) there is a simple way to make a programming fixture using two blank boards to make a jig for aligning the pins. It is simpler if the boards have mounting holes, but that is not required. If you are interested in details let me know and I will dig out the drawings and send them to you.

if you have a better way then the sparkfun instructions would love to see it.

does anyone have a CNC machine to make one or should i just pay the $200 for a panel of all the parts needed.

I used the pogo style test probe pins to make my test setup for my SHT11 modules. I just used a swinging style clamp made by Carr-Lane. It works rather well for a simple setup. I have a huge bag of pogo pins, if you PM me an address, I'll look for the bag and send you some.

There are many different kinds of pogo pin tips, each designed for a particular application. It's best to pick one that either self-centers (e.g. a pyramid or cone for via holes or a reverse cone for clipped leads), pierces the thin layer of oxide (e.g. a single or crown point for non-gold traces and pads), or both. Even with an alignment jig, these can be critical issues.

good thing to know. in this board i have almost know usable vias because i am using blind vias to allow the top side of board to be usable. i guess i do not need pads for vdd and vss since i can just connect to the pins.

i was thinking for alignment and easier test rig could be made if i drill 2x 1.02mm wholes in opposite corners of the board. then i could just slide the board over 2 alignment pins.

Not sure if this is much help but I made two test fixtures for checking boards. The diagram shows the details.

The first was for smoke alarms, and the boards had mounting holes that could be used for alignment of the board under test. The base and mid boards were smoke alarm boards without components. The mounting holes were drilled out to accommodate machine screws to hold the base and mid board in alignment, and the top portion of the screws were machined to fit the standard mounting holes snugly. The pins were soldered to the base board and supported and aligned by the mid board. A ribbon cable was used to connect the pins from the base board to a parallel I/O board.

The second was for an S100 CPU board, which did not have mounting holes. I used aluminum angle to align the board under test with the test fixture. Pin mounting was the same as above.

Sorry for the simplistic diagram. The blueprints were too far gone to be scanned. Hope it helps.

Deleted my post? I don't think so.

It looks like others have thrown in several options and ideas. I would have written more but I was on the go when I dropped the little note I did. Work has me overly engaged.

Phil's ideas of self centering pins with cones is what I see the most or used. The idea can be used with double sided boards, you just need to spend time with the test jig setup to make the proper holders and alignments.
