Phil,

I note there is a Fry's in Renton, where ever that city is. Maybe too far for normal jaunts.

I live about 15 miles south of the Wilsonville, OR store. One can shop on-line, but nothing like having items in hand to examine, huh?yeah.gif

Harley,

I've never been to the Fry's in Renton (south of Seattle). I've been close a few times, but never had a big enough reason to fight Seattle's horrendous traffic getting there. I've gotten spoiled, living in a small town, and have lost my patience for big-city driving.

Well, stewardess if you offer me something warm and lumpy I'll take it .... Hot chocolate and a pillow sir ?

Anyone who knows me well, knows that I don't care to fly.. :) I'm a card carrying member SOAR.
(Ok, so I'm a control freak.. I'm told it comes from an insecure childhood. )

In spite of my poor comfort of flight, most of the trip was extremely smooth. Coming back to Ohio,
the pilot decided it would be "neat" to come in low over the trees before the runway at CAK.
Had a bunch of people asking if it was an emergency landing.

Me? I've discovered I'm not a fan of crop dusting..... :)

I can't believe it's been a whole week since UPEW. Meeting people, looking at everyone's projects, staying up late, just grooving on the vibe. Man I miss it.

I was going back through all the threads on UPEW. I found that I should consider myself lucky because:

1) I live 15 miles from Parallax.
2) I work 3 miles from Parallax
3) I am able to visit Fry's on the way home or during my lunch hour.
4) I have access to top notch soldering equipment, including 2D x-ray and IR rework tools. (reworking the audio chip on the demo board was cake)
5) My wife is re-arranging the den to make room for an inside workbench for my "toys". Then, she can stamp (the ink kind for cards/scrapbooks) while I "stamp" (the Parallax kind).
6) I got a boost on a few of my ideas/projects from discussions with a few folks at UPEW.
7) The deadlines for my 2 open projects are way out in December and March of next year. Several people seemed to be working hard to get their current projects done in a week or two.
8) I occasionally have the chance to have PCBs made for free when they are small enough to fit into the wasted space on another project's panelization. PCB costs seem to be a roadblock/speed bump for many people. I am actually laying out the Basic Stamp Tester PCB into a size that fits under a 40 pin ZIF socket so that I can get the PCBs made for free.

I am unlucky however, because I am averaging about 2 hours of free time a week to spend with my "Parallax toys". cry.gif

Managed to build the ucontroller board and game stacker on Friday afternoon...my over 40 eyes are getting totally dependant on soldering under a magnifying lamp...and the more I do it, the less I burn my own fingers cuz of the depth of field differences....also have to say it was one of the more enjoyable geek-fests I've been to in a long time so my gratitude to Parallax for being such good hosts.....with the three day w/end it was nice to have an extra day at the end of the week to play like that and still have 2 more days to spend with the family.... next will validate voltages on pins then will apply active electrons to see what magic can happen....also regretting not picking up a hydra at the "show price" ho well.....maybe they'll go on sale soon again...

Andrew,

(Sorry, I couldn't resist... smile.gif )

I found that I should consider myself lucky because:

1) I live in a small town more than 750 miles north of Sacramento's summer heat, oppressive traffic, and suburban sprawl. (We have four stoplights.)

2) I don't have to drive to work.

3) Being weak-willed when it comes to gadget lust, every time I can't go to Fry's, I save enormous sums of cash!

It's all relative, I suppose, but I've gotten rather used to the lack of commercial amenities and getting everything via UPS. And yet, the local Radio Shack carries Parallax products, so I'm not that far "off the grid".

(Now, if Parallax would just move their entire operation to Port Townsend, my life would be perfect!)

If Parallax is going to move, they should move to Nevada City, California....We only have one stop light.....<grin>

And I'd bet one of those is right in front of Walmart :)

Phil, no problem, I am not a big city boy in any sense........

1) My town only has 2 real stop lights. 6 total if you count the one at the high school crosswalk, elementary school crosswalk, bike trail crossing, and in front of the fire station. I don't count those since they are almost always green and aren't at an intersection...........

2) Well, I don't have to drive to work on Tuesdays; I work from home 1 day a week..... But, when I do drive, my 13 mile commute is mostly backroads through farmland.

We don't have a Walmart in town (closest one is 4 miles though) and we have only had a McDonalds for a few years. I have one of the typical lots in town, a 1/4 acre.

You are right though, it is all relative. I don't deal with traffic except on rare occasions, even though I only live 20 minutes from downtown Sac. When I travel and people ask where I am from, I say Sacramento, because no one knows my little town. (Rio Linda)

· They need to move to Perry County, PA. There is not a single traffic light in·the entire county. It's something of a bragging right for the population.

Bean.
